The Metro Light Rail began operating in 1997. It takes you from Daling Harbour, Ultimo, Pyrmont, Central Station, Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Glebe, The fish Market, Rozelle Bay, St. John Square and Capitol Square.

It was a nice clean ride to get to the Fish Market.

Buses: Sydney Tour Hop On Hop Off Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best ways to see Sydney and Bondi is with a 24 hour ticket aboard an open-top double-decker bus. See all the main sights as you hop on and hop off the tour bus at 30 stops around the city. You can spend as much at the main places of interest before jumping aboard for the next stop.

Each ticket is AUD 36 for 24 hours, which means you can almost get two days worth of action out of it.

Also, one of the features is the fact that there is recorded commentary in Spanish, English, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin.

Departure Time: September to March 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday every 30 minutes. Saturday and Sunday every 20 minutes.

    April to August
9:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday every 30 minutes. Saturday and Sunday every 20 minutes.

  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many Train stations around sydney except for the northern beaches side.
At each train station there is a details map of the train lines so you can plan ahead of time were to get off. Like the buses the trains are a very good way to travel around sydney. They are comfortable and there are undercover security officers gurading the trains at all times. The trains run to the early hours of the morning.

Sometimes its easier to take the train rather than your car to the city centre. Parking is expensive in the city vs a train ticket with will cost around AUD$4.00 Rtn

General in Sydney Advice: Circular Quay - Sydney's Transportation Hub
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are thinking about seeing all that Sydney has to offer, my recommendation would be to base yourself somewhere very close to Circular Quay. Not only is it located centrally within Sydney's CBD, but it also has most of the available transportation forms around the city.

Circular Quay is the location where the Sydney ferries and jetcats launch from, as well as a main stop for the subway/train system. It also has a major bus depot.

Circular Quay is also located centrally in between the Rocks and the Opera House, so it makes an ideal place to enjoy a day walking around!

After our day in the Blue Mountains we were dropped off for one of the few bright spots the day had to offer. The water taxi back to Darling Harbour proved to be entertaining, refreshing, and visually stimulating. There are a lot of mansions along the banks, the skyline view is excellent and the clean air a welcome relief. If you have a chance to take this, or something like it, you should.

  • City Rail is Sidney's submway system. It is fairly extensive, and reaches pretty far into the suburbs. The train cars tend to be large, 2-level affairs with lots of seating, but not so much standing space. Still, they operate fairly often during the rush hours to avoid the serious crunch. The fares are a bit pricy, so if you plan on utilizing the rail quite a bit, you may want to get a discount pass. One attractive option is the daypass, which includes unlimited travel on City Rail, as well as all city buses and ferries, for only A$15. There're, of course, _numerous_ other options, so do your research in advance, as it may be hard to decide exactly what you'll need on the spot.

    Mono rail
  • Tip Rating:
  • A commercial Monorail service operates around the main retail area of the central business district running down to Darling Harbour and skirting the harbour, before returning to the city area. A return trip is a good way of getting some perspective on the upper part of the central business district. It also gives you a great elevated look at picturesque Darling Harbour.

Ferry / Jet Cat / River Cat: Sydney to Manly Jetcat
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of Sydney is accessible by walking, however if you want to really get some great views (at an inexpensive price none the less), I would recommend that you take a Jetcat out in the Sydney harbour. For roughly 7 dollars each way, you can get a great water based view of the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and all of the beautiful beach side communities.

If you are looking to make a nice evening of it, take the sunset ferry over to Manly, where you can enjoy an evening meal on the beach watching the waves.

The first of the day is at 6am and goes until and goes until 11pm.

    Monorail: Monorail
  • Tip Rating:
  • The monorail costs A$4 per trip or A$9 per day. Its a convenient, air-conditioned way to get around, but has a limited scope. It travels only one way, counter-clockwise if you are looking at a map. Its quite comfortable, runs every few minutes, and also has two stops in Chinatown.
