Sydney ferries, jetcats & rivercats are the cheapest way to see Sydney's beautiful harbour. Regular ferry services run to 37 wharves, including Manly, Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay, Milsons Point, Drummoyne and the riverside city of Parramatta. Circular Quay is a good place to start your harbour experience as this is the main ferry wharf in Sydney. Prices vary according to distance travelled.

Sydney on the whole has a pretty good transport system ranging from busses, trains, cabs and ferries and one beaut (not yet tried by me) .......the mono rail........ I was very impressed though by the ski lift type transport as an alternative to either bus or shanksus pony up the mountain at Taronga Park Zoo.

We went to the Tauronga Zoological Park but we first had to cross the harbour at Circular Quay. We had to wait some 15 minutes, therefore I bought 20 more postcards. My Grandma Atkins who was 74 years old at the time strayed away from us. When we got on the boat, we very nearly left her at Circular Quay. No doubt Daddy got mad because on these trips, regardless of age, you have to stay alert all the time. According to Daddy, he wasn't going to ever take her as far as Red Bank (a small community in southern Virginia between Virgilina and South Boston).

Trains: Travel from Sydney Airport to City Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • The public transport train trip from Sydney Airport to the City Centre does not come cheap. Although the government built the railway tunnel from the airport to the city, a private company built only the railways stations, hence, they charge a HUGE FEE to use the railway stations at the airport. It cost about $13.00 for each ticket one way! OUCH!

A taxi would cost about $25.00 or so.

If you're in a group of 2 or more people, it will probably be more convenient and cheaper to get a taxi into Sydney's city centre. At least it will take you straight to your hotel/hostel door.

If you don't want to pay a high fare, and not get a taxi, use the airport bus (red colour).

Buses: Buses between Sydney and Canberra
  • Tip Rating:
  • I travelled from Canberra to Sydney on a bus operated by Murray's Coaches during my visit to Australia in April 2006. I believe this is Australia's largest coach company.

I caught the 9am bus from Jolimont Centre bus terminal, which arrived at Sydney's Eddy Street bus terminal (right by central station), just over 3 hours later. At the same time as my bus departed, another bus (which stopped at Sydney's international airport en route to Eddy Street) was also departing. The first bus of the day leaves Canberra at 7am. Further buses depart at 1pm and 6pm. There is also a bus that departs at 3pm on Fridays and Sundays.

In the opposite direction, buses depart for Canberra from Sydney's Eddy Street bus terminal daily at 9am, 1pm, 3pm and 6pm. There is a bus at 7:30pm on Fridays and Sundays.

The cost of a one-way journey, as at April 2006, was 36 AUD. Concessions and children's tickets were available for 29 AUD.

The company's website advertises one-way tickets for just 15 AUD. These must be purchased:

    - at least 2 weeks prior to departure,

    - via the Internet.

You can find detailed timetables for coaches operating between Canberra and Sydney HERE

No entertainment or refreshments were available on board, but this wasn't a problem for a relatively short journey of 3 hours.

Driving and Vehicle Rental: Sydney's Does have cheap and reliable car hire!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Last month while helping some visitors from the UK plan their trip in OZ I discovered Bayswater Car rentals in Kings Cross. The cars were new and in good condition, and the prices were almost half of many other firms. We paid $680? or thereabouts for 12 days hire with unlimited kilometres. The next cheapest quote was over $1000. This was Christmas week too... Prices are often much lower.
Their web service was not great, said no cars available when there were.... best to call them direct.

Taxis / Water Taxis: Sydney Taxi Cabs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxis in all parts of Australia are tightly controlled by government regulations. Sydney taxis are all metered and the driver must turn on the meter as soon as you enter the cab. Sydney taxis are generally plentiful and can be ordered by phone, taken from a taxi rank, or hailed in the street. All taxis have a roof-mounted, white illuminated sign with the word `taxi', fitted with a high-intensity, small orange light which can be seen in daylight. While the orange light is on, the taxi is available for hire. Sydney taxis operate on a standard fee which does NOT change regardless of the day or time, however a surcharge of approximately $1 may apply after midnight in some areas

I found that getting in and out of Sydney was done most efficiently by water and rail. Was driven through it once and that seemed awful painful even in the early morning hours. However, the rail system up from Gymea, and in from Penrith was efficient. From the Central station it was a quick ride to Circular Quay where there were Ferries to the Beaches, to the Zoo, to anywhere in the harbour. Up the river from Circular Quay there was the RiverCat - a terrific catamaran ferry service that went further than a traditional hulled ferry boat would be able to go. I took it up to near Parramatta where my friend picked me up. It was great to either be inside or out on deck.

    Airways / Airports: Quantas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Quantas was a great airline to use. The flight was very smooth and comfortable. The flight crew was very friendly and accomodating. The movies and TV on demand was a great way to pass the time. The meals and snacks were not bad considering it was "airline" food. I can't wait to fly with them again!
