 | Sydney Warnings or Dangers | Tips 21 - 30 of 172 | | I have lived here all my life and i love it. Some areas to avoid - Redfern without a doubt, no reason why tourists would go there anyway. King's Cross is an experience, just watch your back and you will be fine. The 'Cinema strip' on George St at night is dangerous - that includes from the Queen Victoria Building to Sydney RSL club i would say. Dodgy areas outside of the city loop: Bankstown and Punchbowl, dont go there if not necessary - drugs and violence occurs. Some areas of the Campbelltown district would give the Bronx a run for its money anyday - particuarly Claymore, Airds and Macquarie Fields. In the Penrith district Mount Druitt and Erskine Park are pretty dodgy at times. Most of Sydney is beautiful, just stay away from the crappy parts and you will never want to leave. Leave a Comment |
Do not forget to drink with MODERATION... even if the aussie beers are very tempted. Each Australian state have its own proud: Tooheys (NSW), my favorite by the way XXXX (QLD), my favorite too by the way Cascade (TAS), my favorite too too by the way VB (VIC), my favorite too too too by the way Coopers (SA), my favorite too too too too by the way Emu (WA), my favorite too too too too too by the way ??? (NT), ouf I'm saved I did not taste the local beer as I never go there (yet)... should come back soon ;-) TIP: Drink plenty if water (if still enough room to drink something;-) before to go sleep to reduce the risks of hangover. It is commonly known that the ozone layer over Australia is disappearing and because of this it is especially important that you take care and use sunscreen even if you are just walking around the city. Depending on your skin type, I would recommend a 45 sunblock for the body and sunblock made especially for the face. For my face I use a moisturizer which has a spf of 15. Leave a Comment |
Sydney is an easy, carefree city and I can see why you wouldn't want to leave. During my visit I found myself wondering what it would be like to live in such a beautiful city. I didn't want to leave and I promised myself that even though I had to leave, I would return very soon. Leave a Comment |
The most convenient way to get local currency is to use your ATM card at the many banks dotting along Sydney. You will find the you get better rates than exchanging your currency at those exhange booths. There are plenty of banks with ATM machines throughout Sydney, including the airport where you may just want to withdraw some money before venturing to the city center. Leave a Comment |
In the bushier suburbs and parklands of Sydney, lurk dangerous creatures whose bite could be fatal if left untreated. Funnel web spiders and venomous snakes abound in Sydney especially during their mating season. They normally hide under rocks. Wear good hiking boots and long trousers when bushwalking around the city's many parklands. Leave a Comment |
Refern is notorious for trouble, especially at night. If you can avoid it, then that is the best option. Otherwise, take extra care with your wallets and handbags and try to avoid eye contact with most people. Do not give any money to beggars as bag snatchers and pick pockets use the homeless as decoys to snatch your bag/wallet while you are giving money. There are also alot af assaults that take place in Redfern, so please be careful! If you do get into trouble, there are always guards at the Train Station. |
Sydney is generally a very safe city. Crimes againat people (murders, rapes, etc) are low compared to other cities. However, crimes against property (burglary, pickpocketing, etc) is relatively high -- but probably not any or much higher than other cities. You'll see a lot of bars on house windows in a lot of areas. Just take the same precautions you would take in other major cities - don't carry heaps of cash, don't flaunt jewelry/ cameras/ money. I used to go around Sydney a lot at night, walking to and from the University, around downtown, etc and I never felt unsafe. There's not really anything to worry about. Leave a Comment |
Although not dangerous, these are incredibly pesky. At certain times of the year, like November, there are a LOT of them, and they seem to like buzzing around people's faces and ears. I don't think there is a repellant for them, but expect to be shooing with your hands very frequently. The good news is that in bad weather they stay inside. Leave a Comment |
Be careful around the Kings Cross area late at night, particularly around the back alleyways. This is the Red Light district and a place where drug addicts and prostitute generally converge. You may find yourself approached by people for money or trying to avoid drunken louts. Not the prettiest side of Sydney. However if you are into adult entertainment, sex shops, etc, you might be interested in visiting here. It can be quite interesting if you can oversee the seedy side. A popular place for stag/bucks nights. Leave a Comment |
