Oxford Tavern: Live Music venue
The Oxford Tavern is one of few venues in Wollongong that caters to the live music scene. They tend to have a variety of different sounds playing here, some great, some not so great...but all in all, its a great atmosphere. In the main area inside, its mostly tables and chairs, with fireplaces centrally located making for a cozy atmosphere. They have pool tables out the back and some arcade style game machines. There is also an outdoor courtyard. I've recently heard rumours they are going to be expanding which is fantastic news. The crowd here is a bit of a mix, depending on whos playing for the night. Mostly young, uni types but anyone is welcome. The prices for drinks are pretty average, but there is mostly no cover charge (prob. good to just double check dep. on whos playing). You may have to pay $5 for parking, this all depends on whats happening in Wollongong on that night. If there is something on at the Entertainment Centre or WIN Stadium they will charge for parking (as most people will head straight to their parking lot). You will get a ticket once paying your $5, and thats redeemable over the bar as a drink voucher.
Dress Code: No dress code, the place is pretty casual. However, they do have the occasional goth nights, where you tend to see people dress up...You can pretty much get away with anything here.
The Harp: For the oldies...
Very nice bar! They have a huge wrap around type fish tank with huge tropical fish, enough to keep me mesmerised!!!
This place is for the older crowd, in saying that I mean 25 plus. Its always very packed, and they have a large dance floor area.
Drinks are a bit pricey, and you'll be likely to wait at the bar.
Dress Code: Dress to impress.
The Beach Bar: Gorgeous Position
The Beach Bar tends to accomodate a bit of an older crowd,as opposed to the likes of the Bourbon Street and the Glasshouse etc.
Thursday and Sunday nights are popular here. Particular packed in the summer months.
Dress Code: Dress to impress.
Otherwise known as The North Wollongong Hotel: "The North Gong"
This pub is really popular with the young crowd, especially in summer, especially on Thursday nights and Sundays. (It also holds the biggest new years party in Wollongong.)
They are obviously doing well, as they have just gotten hold of the block next door in order to do extensions.
Very nice atmosphere. I like this place myself.
Dress Code: Casual or dressy. Wear whatever you want.
Oxford Tavern: Wollongong has some nice pubs
This isn't actually one of them.
I mean it will do at a pinch - but what has gone wrong?
I think it was an older type pub that got renovated in bits and bobs and not thought out properly.
There is a rather cheerless beer garden at the front.
Then a small TAB section (non smoking) at the front with the older guys who like betting. But they also usually like smoking. And the tall bar stools are really uncomfortable for the older style betting kind of guy. Maybe they keep falling off the stools and breaking their hips. Which is why they look so uncomfortable and bleak. (Or maybe the horses they back keep breaking their hearts.)
Then there is a huge bistro area. Acres of tables. (No smoking.)
Then around the corner is a pool table SMOKING area with those tall uncomfortable bar stools.
I couldn't fault the staff though. Young cheery helpful gel (pretty too) who minded my drink for me while I went to the Ladies and discovered she had charged me too much and gave me some money back.
It is a music pub, music on a couple of nights a week. Now that is a plus.
Oh I will definitely go there again - just to criticise what they have got wrong.
BTW tavern means they don't do accomodation.
Dress Code: STOP PRESS Pubs are now non smoking in Australia so that means all the smokers will be crammed into the cheerless tiny beer garden area at the front. Unless they have gussied up an outdoor area out the back.
Bourbon Street: The place to be in Summer...
Bourbon Street continues to be a popular night spot in Wollongong, particularly in the Summer months.
There are 3 levels here. Bottom level is kinda where you would chill out and talk. They have a bar and music videos playing. Ground level is your chart type music and the main bar area, whilst the top level is your dance music and another smaller bar.
Tends to be a pretty young crowd, think Schoolies...
The queues here can be quite ridiculous, to the point if your arriving after 10pm, you mightn't get in at all!
Especially in Summer, its a good idea to head to Bourbon Street about 8pm, get your stamp and go and have dinner in town. That way you can head back later, present your stamp and just walk straight in.
Bourbon Street has a $5 cover charge, and they usually have $3 spirits up until 11pm.
They close at 3am.
Dress Code: Girls can get away with wearing whatever they like here, but watch out guys! They seem to have a particular preference for the "surfie type". Casual shorts/pants with a shirt and skater type shoes will get you in for sure. They tend to frown upon anything dressy.
They generally will not let in party groups ie. hens nights, bucks nights, football groups.
Steelers Club.: Footie Fans.
The Steelers Club is directly opposite WIN Stadium and is the home of the St George Illawarra Dragons Rugby League Club. They were formally known as the Illawarra Steelers, hence the name "Steelers Club".
If you go expecting this enormous big club, you will really be disappointed. This place is tiny. They have a bar, a small eatery, and a few pool tables and pokies. They do stay open until 5am.
Great to watch the dragons "away" games on the big screen over a few drinks with friends.
Dress Code: General club attire is required for entry. Think collared shirts and nice pants. Gos without saying no thongs, sandels etc.
The Glasshouse Tavern: Another hotspot...
The Glasshouse is another popular spot in Wollongong. Much the same vibe as Bourbon Street, except with indoor and outdoor areas.
Open till 5am over the Weekends.
