    Chef's Choice: First Class Asian

by lindyz Updated Jan 20, 2011

If its cheap, quick and delicious Asian youre after, then this is the place for you! Its very similar to Food World where we eat regularly, but I only ate here for the first time last week in January and it was very impressive. Its centrally located, huge selection on the menu, which is mainly Chinese, Cambodian and Thai, food is fresh and very very cheap.

The restaurant is also byo and is open 7 days a week, for eat in or take-away.

Favorite Dish: I had the Seafood Fried Rice Noodles (thick rice noodles are my super favourite!) and it was delicious and cost only $8.80 - what a bargain. Sue and I also shared delicious rice paper rolls, 3 rolls for $6.00.

    Some other delicasies to try:-

    King Prawn Noodle Soup $8.20
Laksa Combination Noodle Soup - $8.20
Chicken with Chinese Mushrooms - $7.80
Lemongrass Beef - $7.80 (Sue had this one)
    Seafood Chow Mein - $8.80
    Special Fried Rice - $7.50
Pad Thai fried noodles - $7.80
    Almond Chicken $9.00
Pork Mince with Green Beans - $8.00

Johno's at North Beach: Affordable fine dining

by lindyz Written Apr 15, 2011

After a big day out of sightseeing and shopping with a friend, we went looking for somewhere to have a mid-afternoon glass of wine to end our perfect day. I found this place "Johno's at North Beach" and it did not disappoint. Easy to find and plenty of parking nearby, it was affordable and well presented. We only wanted a glass of wine, but had to order some food in order for them to serve us alcohol, so we just bought some garlic and herb bread!!! Prices here were very reasonable and menu selection looked delicious. I shall definitely be returning here for a meal in the not too distant future!

Mylan Restaurant: Cheap yummy Vietnamese food

by lindyz Updated Apr 4, 2011

Was taken to this restaurant for the first time last week, suggested by Anna, who is the Chinese boss of my travelling buddy, Tracy, and who also will be taking us both to Hong Kong in 2011!!!

Mylan is classed as a Vietnamese Restaurant, but also specialising in traditional Thai and Asian dishes. Specialities are soup, especially Pho Soup, noodles, rice and salads. Mylan is BYO and also has takeaway.

Price is extremely reasonable, with most meals costing $10 each or less. I ate a huge plate of rice noodles with chicken and vegetables for $10. Anna and Tracy had an enormous bowl of soup, I think they were both less than $10.

This restaurant is ALWAYS very busy, and you may have to wait a little while to get a table - BUT THE WAIT IS WORTH IT FOR SURE - I WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING!

This Restaurant has won "Asian Restaurant of the Year" 5 years running!

Favorite Dish: Rice noodles with chicken saucy stirfry $10.00
    Vegetarian Fried Rice $8.50
Sizzling Beef, Chicken or Combination $10.00
Spicy Ginger & Basil with Beef, Chicken or Combination $10.00
Vietnamese mild Chicken Curry & Rice $10.00
Thai Red Curry with Rice & King Prawns $10.50
Laksa Chicken or Beef Soup $10.00
Pho Noodle Soup with Beef or Chicken $10.00
    Wonton Oriental Noodle Soup $9.00

AS YOU CAN SEE, THE CHOICE FOR DISHES IS EXTENSIVE, DELICIOUS AND WELL PRICED! This is just a sample of dishes on offer, the actual Menu is much longer!

Myra Cafe De Pide: Top class Turkish Pide

by lindyz Written Nov 17, 2009

I discovered this amazing little place just soon after it opened, and I am so glad I ventured on in there. Its rather close to where we live, so nice and handy to stop in for a quick lunch. Selling mainly Turkish Pide in about 20 different varieties, all served with the yummiest tzakziki on the side. Meals are approximately $10, some going up to about $12. They also serve coffees and cakes and some breakfast options, but the Pides are simply the BEST!

Favorite Dish: Spinach and Feta Pide - YUM YUM - and only $10.

Levendi: Best Fish 'n' Chips in the Gong

by lindyz Written Nov 20, 2009

If you want good value fish 'n' chips with a view (and lots of seagulls!) then this is the place to go! This shop is right on Wollongong Harbour, and theres a little kiddies park right next door. Theres plenty of tables and chairs, and when its busy and they are all taken, there is plenty of grass, so just bring your blanket and sit down for a seafood picnic!

The menu here is long, with plenty of options, including salads, burgers, sweets and coffees. For the 2 of us, we will usually get a seafood cocktail pack and a couple of crab sticks and the cost is about $10 or thereabouts, dont quote me exactly on the cost, but its not much dearer if any.

But the best thing is that you just get to sit back and relax, enjoy your yummy fresh-cooked seafood and take in the atmosphere.

WARNING - DO NOT FEED THE SEAGULLS THOUGH!!! They have a tendency to get a bit viscious when provoked with food, and they also have been known to swoop down while you have a scrummy bit of fish in your hand and swipe it off you and fly away!!! And ... there goes your lunch!

Caesar's Chicken Shop: Every Friday night is Chicken 'n' Chips Night!

by lindyz Updated Nov 20, 2009

For as long as I can remember, and certainly for the whole time we have lived where we are now and that is 17 years, EVERY Friday night is "Chicken 'n' Chips" night. I guess its the end of the week thing, YAY its the weekend, I cant be bothered cooking!!!

Caesar's is only about a 5 minute drive from our house (lucky for us!) and they always deliver freshly chargrilled chickens with a variety of sides for a value price. We usually get either a Big Meal Deal which consists of one chicken, a large salad and a large chips for about $25. Or we will get a Family Deal which consists of one chicken, a large chips, a large gravy, 6 chicken nuggets and a large bottle of coke for about $25. Both these meals are enough to feed 4-5 people, also with enough chicken left over to be the base of another meal the following night. I certainly call that good value!!!

Some of the delictable foods on offer include:
    * Chickens, whole, 1/2 or 1/4
    * Roast pumpkin and potato
    * Chicken schnitzels by itself or in a burger
    * Country fried chicken pieces
    * Roast beef or pork, by itself or in a roll
    * Curried chicken, Butter Chicken, Beef Stroganoff or Lang Rogan Josh
    * Fried Rice, Lasagne or Creamed Potatoes
    * Hot chips and Potato wedges
    * Salads including greek, potato, tabouli, italian chicken, seafood supreme, thai beef, tandoori chicken, thai noodle and garden salads.
    * Fresh fruit salad and triple berry yoghurt
    * Rice pudding and Chocolate Mousse

Caesar's also have a catering service, making your special function or celebration a success and less stress for you!

  • Baan Krua Thai: Central but often overlooked treasure

by VanessaPR Written May 16, 2007

The food is amazing. I love the fresh flavours and full bodied characteristics of the thai food. The quality of ingredients sets it apart from many thai restaurants. Soft-shelled crab isn't something I have seen on the menu before and it was an amazing experience.

The ambience is very soothing with traditional thai music helping to create an oasis in the middle of the city. Baan Krua is across the road from Wollongong's strip of restaurants and is one of the best kept secrets of Wollongong cuisine. Unlike Monsoon and Mulan you are almost guaranteed great service and should not need to make a booking.

If you choose a table near the window you can look out over Keira Street and watch the people and cars go by.

Favorite Dish: Deep-fried soft shell crab with thai sauce - so tender and amazing texture makes this an experience not to be missed!

    Costa Azzurra: Italian

    by leebee1 Written Jan 3, 2005

We really love this little Italian restaurant just 5 mins drive north of Wollongong. My partner and I are really into sampling all the little restaurants looking for something special. This place fits into that catagory. The food is wonderful, no matter what you order, with service to match.
One thing I personally don't like, is walking into a resaurant that is so loud, you cant hold a conversation. The ambience here is so you can hold a conversation without screaming at each other. You can eat inside or out.
Must make weekend bookings as it gets booked out here!

Favorite Dish: Any of the pasta dishes are really just superb!

Monsoon: The place to be seen at...

    by leebee1 Written Jan 3, 2005

This Vietnamese restaurant is ALWAYS full, any night of the week! Its vertially imperative that you make a booking!
This is one of "those" restaurants, that in order to have a conversation you have to scream at each other.
The tables are all very close together, and I cant help shake the feeling that they want you out as quickly as possible to get the next people in.
The waitstaff, although very nice, have no clue about the menu. Ask them a question, your not going to really get an answer.
This is not the place you would go to if your after an intimate meal with your partner.
I would only recommend to the young funkies...

Favorite Dish: The food is simple, and designed to be shared by ordering several dishes and everyone at your table helping themselves.
I have to say the food IS good, if you can handle your surroundings!

    Thai Basil: Thai Terrific!!

    by Jasmine12 Written May 4, 2005

Thai Basils is a tiny, family run cafe in downtown Wollongong. The people are awesome but the food is even better--affordable and delish!

Favorite Dish: There Pad Thai is the best in the city (in my opinion) and their Satay is great too!!!

Tullimbah Inn Seafood Restaurant: Old world charm

by lindyz Updated Apr 13, 2010

My husband Frank won an $80 gift voucher to use at this Restaurant, if it wasnt for that voucher we probably would not have eaten here, as it is about 35 k's from our house! However, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was ambient and the staff were attentive, so all in all, it was a great experience.

This Restaurant is an old farm house in Albion Park, which is about 30k's south of Wollongong. Easy to get to, but slightly out of the way, on the road that leads to Macquarie Pass and pretty much with nothing at all around it except for paddocks!!!

I would not really call this Restaurant a cheap eat out, but if you want to spoil yourself, then this is the place for you. They call themselves a Seafood and Steak Restaurant and it is licensed as well as BYO for bottled wines only.

They also cater for Christenings, Weddings, Business functions, Birthday parties, Anniversaries, Engagements and Group bookings, with the Restaurant catering for about 50 guests in total.

Favorite Dish: Our meal consisted of:~
    Garlic bread
Entree of scallops wrapped in bacon
Main for me of Chicken with avocado in a cream sauce
Main for Frank of whole lemon sole
And a VB Beer for Frank with water to me.
Total cost of $84.10, so we had to pay a whole $4.10!!!

I would say a meal of a main and a drink for each would cost around $25-$35 per person.

    Piato Grand: Long lovely lunches

by lindyz Updated Apr 4, 2011

Meals at Piato Grand are not what I would call cheap .... but they are definitely lovely!
This Restaurant has a modern decor and a complimenting modern menu, and situated in downtown Wollongong in Market Street.

Favorite Dish: Today I savoured a meal of crumbed veal on feta mash with a rocket salad for $21.90 and it was absolutely scrummy. Ive also eaten their Chicken Caesar Salad, very nice as well.
A meal and a drink will cost between $20-$30 so I guess the prices are reasonable.
They also cater for Christenings, Cocktail parties, Christmas parties, Intimate weddings, and Corporate functions.

Boufflers Seafoods: Boufflers Seafoods Overlooks the Harbour

by swings Written Oct 25, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Boufflers stands on the small ridge that backs the beach around the harbour. The view is great, and you'll feel very relaxed but for the shrill squawks of the seagulls demanding handouts!

Boufflers has a Commanding View of the Harbour
