take the train to Wollongong
Wollongong has its own train-station and passanger-trains are going there as well, so it will be very easy to get to Wollongong by train as an easy daytrip from Sydney.
Just be aware that the carmuseum is about 20km from that train-station and I dont know how much a taxi would be or if there would be a public bus to the carmuseum.
Read more about that trainline in the link below !

get to Woolongong by car
I drove to Wollongong in my rental car, and the right roads were quite easy to find, as Wollongong was written on almost any signposts along the highway in the south of Sydney.
You will find a lot of parking-spaces in that town of 280.000 inhabitants, just take a look around, the parkingspaces in the centre of town will be restricted to short-time-parking and you will have to pay, while just a few meters OUTside of the towncentre these restrictions will not apply and you can park there all day long without any charge !
I even spent the night in my small motorhome on such a public parking-space without any problem.

The new FREE Gong Shuttle Bus
This service was only introduced a few months ago and it is certainly being well used by the public and appreciated - they are loving it!! A FREE shuttle bus that does a continuous loop in both directions passing by most of the main Wollongong attractions.
The Bus starts at Burelli Street, then down Corrimal Street, into Smith Street and then along Cliff Road with lovely ocean views. It then heads along Georga Hanley Drive past Puckeys Reserve and Wollongong Uni Innovation Campus. Then it heads west along Elliotts Road and then left onto the Princes Highway. Along the Princes Highway, past the TAFE and then onto Wollongong University, then makes its way up to Wollongong Hospital, along Crown Street and then back to Burelli Street.
The service operates between 7am and 10pm Monday to Friday, every 10 minutes during peak periods and every 20 minutes in off peak. The weekend service operates every 20 minutes between 8am and 6pm.
My son has quite often caught this bus home from Uni, the closest bus stop to our house is only about a 1km from our house, so he will just walk the rest of the way.
I just wonder why it took them so long to introduce such a fantastic service. Its not only good for locals and students, but also great for tourists, who can hop on the bus and do a few loops for FREE to see whats around. You will be able to easily recognise the bus and it is painted green with "Free Gong Shuttle" on the side.
For more info check out their website listed below and just click on the "Free CBD & Gong Shuttle" icon.
Excellent trains up to Sydney
Yeah, I know the locals complain - but if they want something to complain about try living at Wingello.
Check out City Rail for times - link below.
For instance the first train leaves Wollongong for Sydney at 3-27am and the last train at 11-38pm.
Depending on how many stations the train stops at it could take between 40 minutes and an hour.
If you want to get up to the Southern Highlands, Bowral, Bundanoon, Wingello etc a bus service - about 3 a day each way - is available and you can have the ride of your life up the big hill. Two hairpin bends! Hope your driver doesn't lose his bottle.
The Cityrail train service is an easy way to get to/around Wollongong.
Wollongong is an hour and a half from Sydney on the train. Cost is about $17 return if you go in peak time, half that for off peak time. The train ride from Sydney to Wollongong is quite scenic and lovely, going through the National Park in Waterfall, then along the Coastline.
You can go to their website for time table infomation, or just go to the train station and pick up a timetable. A word of warning though...the service isnt always on time!!!
USE THE "GONG SHUTTLE" TO GET AROUND
I arrived in Woolongong by train and of course then look for the best way to the city Centre. Not far from the Main Railway station is a bus stop for the "FREE BUS" ..This is known as the GONG SHUTTLE" and does a loop right around the city and visits many stops. The round trip is about 40 minutes and covers North Woolongong (University), Woolongong Hospital, The beach area for North and South (main ) Beaches, Main St and City Centre, The WIN Stadium along with other stops.
You will see the Bus Stops marked FREE BUS.. along with there shelters. This is definately the way to get around the ".Gong" These green busses run about every ten to fifteen minutes.

GETTING THERE BY TRAIN
I took the train to Woolongong from Sydney Central railway station. Of course there are are many other options to get to Woolongong also by bus and car, BUT by train, one must go from Sydney Central. The journey is a very pleasant one and once out of the city southern suburbs the journey is mostly National Parks and coastal towns and centers. The left hand side of the train going down I found was the best. Trains to Woolongong usually depart central Station about every hour..see RAIL information desk on the station for times also tickets purchased at next window. The journey is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Although the distance to Woolongong is only just over 100 kilometers the train makes many stops..
There is a free bus when you arrive in Woolongong City to use and get around the city.(see free bus tip.)

Trains to Wollongong
If you're planning on visiting Wollongong from Sydney, the easiest way by far to get there is by train from Sydney Central station. Tip is to make sure you take the express train. The local service takes about twice as long and is very slowwww....
