Airlie Beach Things to Do

  • Scenic Flights

Airlie Beach is known as the hub for the Whitsunday Islands, and there is no better way to explore the beautiful views of the beaches and reefs than by the air. GSL Aviation is very accommodating and provides numerous flight options for all; local island flights, 1 hour reef and island scenic flights, and even quick 12 minute transfers between...

  • VISIT CACTUS JACKS FOR A GREAT COCKTAIL

This site was chosen as a nightime venue for a "meet up" for evening drinks and munchies at the big VT meet at Airlie Beach. The Margaritas were the popular drink of choice with the "Jose Cuervo" Gold Tequila. These were closely followed by the "Moquitos" they make the best "Moquitos" around. Betska and Aussie Rose were really enjoying these..!!...

  • Leave well alone if you're in a hurry.

Probably the worst dining experience I've ever had and I've been to a lot of restaurants on my travels. The service was terrible and unfortunately the food was undecidedly great so that hardly made up for the bad service. I sometimes wonder whether the bad service which I have suffered from time to time is because i am a lone traveller and the...

  • Tex-Mex in Airlie

This Mexican restaurant located on Airlie Beach's Esplanade seems to be quite popular with the crowds. The first time we tried to eat here, right after our late arrival in Airlie Beach we were told there's a 40 minutes wait. We were quite famished aftere the drive from Townsville so we moved our business elsewhere. The second time we were sitted...

  • Best Night I have ever had!

This nightspot is amazing! From the moment you enter the doors you know you are in a great spot! The drink prices are the cheapest I have ever come across for a nightclub and the music is off the chain playing everything you would want to hear!! The LED wall is crazy and definitely a sick feature of the club. Great staff, really can't fault...

There was no greater pleasure than laying belly up in the lagoon watching flocks of exotic birds flying overhead, all our native birds are black or brown, we particularly enjoyed the rainbow lorikeets, small brightly colured parrots that would visit our balcony in the morning hoping to share our breakfast.
Anyway, back to the cockatoo`s, they get fed and they forage for thier natural diet so there is no need to encourage them (they can get a bit agressive too) Airlie is a wonderful and natural place, lets not try to tame it all.

    Watch the birdies.

Lovely trip by ferry from either Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach. But we were advised not to go early. "This is the time to go. We have been doing it for years There are only a couple of chairs and check in is only 30minutes before the plane goes". WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Well it is a very busy airport...well it was this day. One plane in and out from Sydney. Two for Brisbane. In and out. People landing from one plane and others boarding on another at the same time.

We arrived by ferry and straight into a queue. An hour before our flight was due for departure. But the gate had been open for 2 hours. And our one queue had then to be separated out for 3 different check ins, Sydney and Brisbane (2 airlines)

Then it was another long line through security.

Finally through to the lounge to hear "You are boarding through Gate .."

Time for a toilet stop "Just". Time for coffee "No"

Unique Suggestions: Check out ferry times. Note where they depart; either Shute Harbour (further away from Airlie Beach) or Airlie Beach Marina itself.

The ferry form Airlie Beach calls in to Daydream Is on the way (takes one hour in all) and then goes direct to the airport on Hamilton Is.
    .
The ferry from Shute Harbour calls in to Hamilton Is Tourist side and the Airport as well.(2 stops). It may even go to Daydream Is as well.

We had complimentary shuttle to Airlie Beach. Maybe you have to pay to go to Shute Harbour. I do not know.

Fun Alternatives: Choose a ferry to arrive 2 hours before departure from Hamilton Island if it is a busy day at airport.

Go to Shute Harbour for ferry if you want to look around on Hamilton Is before going to airport. Or else take a ride form Airport area. If you are too early of course you may have your luggage to manage from either areas.

Or just relax...check in..go to the "loo"...have a coffee...freshen up ready for your arrival home.

You could probably call your airline re "check in time"

Airlie Beach What to Pack

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Take as little as possible for a comfortable trip... Swimmers are a must, as is a sarong/shorts/singlets, a hat and sunglasses for around the pool/beach. Also take some long clothes to keep the sun off yourself. A light jumper or jacket is also needed in winter at night sometimes. If you're exploring the islands, good shoes are worthwhile or 'aqua socks' if you're going into the water...

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sunscreen is a must...take lots of it. You will get burnt very easily...

Photo Equipment: Take a good camera and lots of film! Also an underwater camera is good for if you go snorkelling...the fish colours are amazing!!

THE SHORES OF THE PICTURESQUE CORAL SEA LAPS A NUMBER OF ITS FAIRWAYS.
WE STAYED AT ONE OF THE 60 SELF CONTAINED VILLAS WHICH LINE THE FAIRWAYS. THE GARDENS AND LANDSCAPING WERE ESPECIALLY WELL MAINTAINED AND PLEASANT. FACILITIES INCLUDED PAY TV, PRIVATE BALCONY/PATIO, WELL APPOINTED KITCHENS, WASHING MACHINES, AIR CON AND LUXURY BATHROOMS.
WE HIRED A GOLF BUGGY AND HAD LOADS OF FUN ZOOMING AROUND THE GOLF COURSE. IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO TAKE IN THE SCENERY. COST WAS ABOUT $40 FOR 4 HRS. OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE TENNIS, BIKE RIDING, BUSHWALKING AND CROQUET. THE 40 METRE POOL AT THE RAQUET CLUB IS A PERFECT PLACE TO SPEND A QUIET AFTERNOON.
