Lovely trip by ferry from either Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach. But we were advised not to go early. "This is the time to go. We have been doing it for years There are only a couple of chairs and check in is only 30minutes before the plane goes". WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Well it is a very busy airport...well it was this day. One plane in and out from Sydney. Two for Brisbane. In and out. People landing from one plane and others boarding on another at the same time.
We arrived by ferry and straight into a queue. An hour before our flight was due for departure. But the gate had been open for 2 hours. And our one queue had then to be separated out for 3 different check ins, Sydney and Brisbane (2 airlines)
Then it was another long line through security.
Finally through to the lounge to hear "You are boarding through Gate .."
Time for a toilet stop "Just". Time for coffee "No"
Unique Suggestions: Check out ferry times. Note where they depart; either Shute Harbour (further away from Airlie Beach) or Airlie Beach Marina itself.
The ferry form Airlie Beach calls in to Daydream Is on the way (takes one hour in all) and then goes direct to the airport on Hamilton Is.
.
The ferry from Shute Harbour calls in to Hamilton Is Tourist side and the Airport as well.(2 stops). It may even go to Daydream Is as well.
We had complimentary shuttle to Airlie Beach. Maybe you have to pay to go to Shute Harbour. I do not know.
Fun Alternatives: Choose a ferry to arrive 2 hours before departure from Hamilton Island if it is a busy day at airport.
Go to Shute Harbour for ferry if you want to look around on Hamilton Is before going to airport. Or else take a ride form Airport area. If you are too early of course you may have your luggage to manage from either areas.
Or just relax...check in..go to the "loo"...have a coffee...freshen up ready for your arrival home.
You could probably call your airline re "check in time"
