Things to Do

Zillie Falls

Zillie Falls, Atherton

Myndo Says:  Not much to say here. The Zillie Falls is another beautiful waterfall in this area. In good weather this would be nice for a bath, with shower.

Ellinjaa Falls

Ellinjaa Falls, Atherton

Myndo Says:  Ellinjaa Falls: A little bit longer to walk to these falls, especially, if you want to take a picture from below. If it is raining (as it was, when we were here), the ground gets slippery, too, so take care and have shoes with good soles. On the good side, rain will make all...

Barron Falls

Barron Falls, Atherton

Myndo Says:  The bigest and most impressive of the many waterfalls in this surrounding.Especially if you have had quite a lot of rain before (as we didi: see picture).

Milaa Milaa Falls

Milaa Milaa Falls, Atherton

Myndo Says:  The most tropical looking waterfall.Would make a nice film-set. I a wonderful picture spot.(That it is actually quite a big waterfall you can see at the person standing in the right in front of it)

Another forest giant

Another forest giant, Atherton

Kate-Me Says:  And another tree of up to 300 years old, that somehow many years ago the loggers missed...it's the only huge tree of its kind remaining in this forest and the surrounding area.

The Curtain Fig Tree

The Curtain Fig Tree, Atherton

Kate-Me Says:  This huge tree (up to 300 years old) is marked on the map as a tourist attraction in itself, and when we saw it, we could understand why!Absolutely huge!

Lake Barrine Tea House: Fun place to stop for a bite

Lake Barrine Tea House: Fun place to stop for a bite, Atherton

phalangid Says:  This is a functional burger joint with reasonable food. Go for the huge burger with 'the lot'. The food isn't fantastic, but the view is, and there's a nice hike around the lake (as well as a boat tour but why bother?) for before or after a snack. If you're driving through...

Warnings Or Dangers

DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE HEAT OF THE SUN

DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE HEAT OF THE SUN, Atherton

DennyP Says:  ATHERTON TABLELANDS Whenever travelling in these tropical areas never underestimate the heat in the sun.. When you are out and about here, it is like the locals don't take any notice, but you will see most have long sleeve shirts and are all wearing a hat. Always make sure...

Leeches in the Rainforest

Leeches in the Rainforest, Atherton

Myndo Says:  The picture shows Ellinka Falls, another of the many waterfalls around here.Mostly you park your car nearby and walk down the path through the wood to the fall.If its rainy (as we had it) this path can be quite slippery. Also we had to find out, that there are leeches. They...

Purple flowering trees

Purple flowering trees, Atherton

Kate-Me Says:  The most beautiful thing I noticed upon reaching the outskirts of the town of Atherton itself, were the beautiful purple blossomed trees, that we hadn't seen anywhere else in Queensland. I've no idea what type of trees they were, unfortunately.

Historic Church

Historic Church, Atherton

Kate-Me Says:  Here we have a historic wooden church in a little town on the way to Atherton. The detailed brochure actually says that this is the most historic village in North Queensland, but when we got out of the car, the old buildings are far and few between, and there's not that much...
