Brisbane has its own Coat of Arms which feature two gryphons supporting the city shield. Gryphons are mythological creatures, chosen to represent the city because of their spirited nature.
The shield's symbols represent commercial activity and peace, while the motto Meliora Sequimur means 'We aim for the best'
The main symbol on the shield is depicted for Mercury in his capacity as God and Protector of Commerce. The parting line between the blue in the top portion and the white wavy line is supposed to represent the clouds. The Staffordshire knot commemorates the Staffordshire Regiment in which Sir Thomas Brisbane first entered the British Army in 1789; the stars on either side represent his interest in astronomy.
The wavy blue bar on each of the Supporter’s necks refers to the City of Brisbane being a port on the river. The palm fronds in the Crest are a compliment to the valour of the Australian fighting services.
The design is a tribute to Sir Thomas Brisbane, a prominent astronomer. You will be surprised how many of these you will find around the city.
What I like about Brisbane, is that at outside places of interest, is a Transport sign with plenty of details on the area. It lists other sights and all the different modes of transport you can use to reach the area your in.
I thought this was an excellent idea.
Outside the Eagle Farm Racecourse, I could see that I could have come by Bus, Boat, Train or Boat, the Boat would have involved a short walk. As it happened, I came by car!
Farmer's Markets have become very popular in Brisbane.
At these markets, what you find is mainly fruit and vegetables.
Not only fruit and vegetables, but honey and different types of coffees to try. There were plenty of stalls selling foods from around the world, and plenty of areas to sit and enjoy lunch. In different sections, a band was playing for your enjoyment and for the children, there was a bouncing Castle.
There were a few craft stalls, some selling clothes, others had woodwork, jewellery and other craft items.
The markets we went to were the Eagle Farm Markets.
The Markets have a Bus stop close by, and the Train stop is by the Racecourse.
There is plenty of FREE PARKING.
FREE Toilets are on-site.
Admission to the markets was $2.
They are held every Sunday at the Eagle Farm Racecourse from 7 - 12.30pm
Either when walking along the esplanade at the city Botanic gardens, or enjoying a River cruise on the Brisbane Ferry, you will notice the amount of yachts anchored by the Botanic gardens.
These yachts are actually where hundreds of people choose to live. They pay a mooring fee, even so, it is a cheap way to live, plus you wake up to beautiful views every morning.
The minus is when the river floods.
Have you heard of the Spider drink?
I thought it was common world wide, but evidently not, it is unique to Australia and New Zealand. In other parts of the World it is known as an "Ice-cream soda" or "Float"
VT'er friend [maysue] tried a Strawberry one.
This consisted of a scoop of ice-cream with plenty of Strawberry syrup and a bottle of Lemonade to pour on top of this. Once poured, then the mix fizzes and rises, and becomes a very nice, refreshing summer drink.
May enjoyed her "spider" at "Melange" Restaurant by the Roma Street Botanical gardens.
Whilst walking around the Roma Street Botanic Gardens, I happened to notice a Rosella Bush. I was with my Malaysian friend, and she had never heard of Rosella Jam.
Rosella plants that Rosella Jam is made from, grow very well in Brisbane and Queensland as it is the perfect climate for them to grow. The Jam has a taste of its own, it is rich and flavoursome and a lovely pink red colour. Rosella jam is made from the fleshy red calyx and bracts that surround the green seedpod of the plant. The crop must be harvested before it becomes tough and the seedpod discolours.
You will never find Rosella Jam on the supermarket shelves, but you will find it at fetes and Church stall's as it is a best seller, so if you see it for sale, buy it before it disappears!
Rosella Jam is "money for Jam!' It is a dinky-di home-made jam!
Rosella fruit can also be used for Jelly, Tea and Cordial.
In Brisbane, as in the rest of Australia, tipping is NOT customary. In many industries (particularly retail) employers forbid their staff from accepting tips. Tipping is really only accepted in the hospitality industry and is reserved for EXCEPTIONAL service only. Typically, $20 is a reasonable tip for excellent service. If the service was simply good, but nothing out of the ordinary, it is usual to leave no tip.
This is something I have not noticed elsewhere, although I am sure it must happen in other places.
The traffic light control boxes are all painted. The art work is all different for each control box, and often reflects the area or environment the traffic lights are in.
There is some sculpture in Brisbane on public display outdoors, of animals, made out of old engine parts. There is a fish set in a wall, pelicans on a pillar in the river, and kangaroos, lounging in a Brisbane street.
They are great, and often photographed
There were a number of water sculpture's in downtown Brisbane that have unfortunately been removed, they were great also. 1 was a large glass and stainless steel table and chairs that flowed water. Some tourists (the game ones,) went and sat on the chairs to have their photo's taken.
The water Dragons are seen all around Brisbane where there is water.
These lizards are semi-aquatic, using their laterally-compressed tails to propel them when swimming. They are able to remain submerged for long periods of time. Like many lizards, water dragons have a parietal eye, a light-sensitive "third eye" located in the top of the head.
They are frequently seen round the river on sunny days sunbathing, and also at Mt Cootha Gardens with the numerous water features there.
Queensland Anti-smoking laws are the toughest in Australia. Heavy fines apply if you are caught breaking the laws which include:
-no-smoking anywhere inside pubs, clubs, restaurants and workplaces
-no-smoking in commercial outdoor eating or drinking areas
-no-smoking in outdoor public places such as patrolled beaches, children’s playground equipment, major sport stadiums and within 4 metres of non-residential building entrances
-no sales of tobacco products to children under 18 years of age
It's maybe weird that were writing about this subject, but for us (Dutchies) it was quite an experience for us :-)
Of course we do understand what it means whenever we read "Mothers Room" at a sign, but making a picture with a real mother on it ... on her way to her own room is always nice.
These aren't particularly cultural tips for Brisbane but a list of very important Australian cultural icons.

I love this radio station!!! Brisbane´s best rock, 24/7. When I was in Brisbane, they had this 'Guido Hatzis' thing going, a guy with a strange greek-aussie accent calling all sorts of people... it wash the besht, mate... *lol* Triple M just rocks!
If you are in a crowded bar/ pub and people are waiting for their drinks and you suspect that waiter/ bartender will take forever to come and serve you... TIP the bartender/ waitress up front and let them know that you will reward good service. :-)) Yeah, sometimes, money talks. And if you leave a generous tip, the restaurant/ bar will remember you - forever. So, if you intend to come back again and again in
the near future, start by leaving an impressive tip. No, not necessarily US$11,000.... If you leave a generous tip, they will remember you - forever. This usually will also miraculously help them pick you out from a crowd and remember what you are drinking too! :-) If you do spend time waiting at the bar for your table, don?t forget to tip the bartender. The tip you leave at the table might not make it back to them. O.K.?
How to get better service at a restaurant?
If a long wait has gotten you upset, remember it's NOT usually your waiter's fault. If you waited a long time to be seated or served, chances are the restaurant is packed to the brim and all the service staff are working like mad dogs. Relax... No need to let little things like this upset you. You will be surprised to know how a little friendliness will improve the service! Remember, if you treat your
waiter poorly, even the most professional waiter will have trouble rebounding and providing you with a pleasant dining experience. Remember, that's why you waited in the first place. So, smile! And be extremely nice to your waiter. They do sometimes have a bad hair day - like you. :-))
If your waiter has done an EXCELLENT job in serving you.... then you should TELL him/ her that you sincerely appreciated their excellent
service so they will continue to take pride in their work... and yes, when you next visit the restaurant, they will miraculously remember your last order and your favorite drink! Later, you may also wish to drop a little note (email?) to the restaurant manager. As with poor service, you should let a manager know when you have received excellent service. Managers need to recognize their strongest employees to encourage great customer service, telling them about YOUR experiences will help them to do this.
Likewise for chambermaids who clean your hotel room. ALWAYS leave a tip behind after your first night's stay. You'll be impressed how spanking clean your hotel room will be for the duration of your stay. :-)) Again, tip generously. This is my motto - They
(like you) are working to earn a living. Do you like it when your boss appreciates your hard work and give you a huge bonus?
Most likely your answer is yes. This gives your morale a surprising boost and you'd work doubly hard. So I sincerely believe the same rule applies to other people in the service industry too. I don't believe in being harsh and make them work like slaves. I believe in using reverse pscyhology or offering monetary rewards/ incentives to make them work hard. We are, after all, only human.
I learnt all these important tips about treating a customer/ vendor/ client from my previous job with a huge American bank. They swear by the Six Sigma rules... We had to LEARN how some companies like McDonald's and Coca Cola have made IT. Our CEO wanted the Bank to be like Coca Cola... i.e. If a person were to think of hamburgers, inevitably McDonald's comes to mind (instead of Burger King). Talk about
aerated drinks...Coca Cola comes to mind (instead of Pepsi). So, likewise... if we were to think 'banks' - it should be a bank who's motto is 'the Citi that never sleeps' and not other banks. If good service has been extended to us/ me, I will ALWAYS follow up with an email to their General Manager. Always. This method (believe me) works 200% of the time. If you treat people well, you'd find yourself getting the best tables in the restaurant without queuing, getting upgraded to business class on flights, getting invited to special movie premieres and getting invited to special events organized by the clubs and pubs (without even being a member) etc.
