Coochiemudlo Island, Brisbane
"COOCHIE" is what the Island is commonly known as, is located 1km off the coast at Victoria Point.
The Island is a small 5ks, so you can walk the whole Island quite easily, this I have done once. No need to hurry! On the way, I saw the red clay banks, probably these are what the Island was named after, as it means"red rock," holiday shack's, and proper homes, people commute to Brisbane from here.
4 Km of beautiful safe, sandy beaches, which are ideal for the kids and adults alike, makes this popular on the weekends with "Brisbanites." There are also Lifesavers on the weekends for your protection.
Main beach is a good area for children, and its here where you can hire an auqa bike, there is a hire company.
There is also another area for other water sports, such as waterskiing, jet skis, tubing and more....
You can't surf here though, as the waters are calm.
There are parks, shops, and holiday homes available for rent.
Another enjoyable activity, is to HIRE A BICYCLE and ride around the Island. These are found at Coochie Island resort on Victoria Parade.
This Island is a little "gem" known to Queenslanders, but off the tourist track. If you want a lovely, relaxing day, then head to here, its easy to get to.
Perhaps I shouldn't say that, as last time here, I met two couples from England that come here EVERY YEAR for their holidays, for 3months, they love it!
The Coochiemudlo Ferry Service travels from Victoria Point to Coochiemudlo Island 7 days a week, 37 times a day.
Prices are $6.00 return per adult & $3.00 return per child/pensioner.
Departs: End of Colburn Avenue, Victoria Point.
Getting to Victoria Point
Victoria Point can be reached by either turning right at Capalaba, into Mt Cotton Road, and following the signs all the way to Victoria Point (29kms from city centre); or by following Bloomfield Street, Cleveland (which becomes Cleveland-Redland Bay Road) until you reach Colburn Avenue. Turn left into Colburn Avenue to reach the main part of Victoria Point. Victoria Point is the gateway to Coochiemudlo Island.
Victoria Point is also accessible by Bus
Coochiemudlo Island (Coochie to locals) is a relatively small island just off Brisbane. It is a great place to stay with kids or teenagers, as they can roam the island freely and safely.
One of my favourite activities is getting on my push bike and taking off for a ride around the island, and in and out of the local streets.
There are at least 2 beaches you can swim at. Both have barbeque areas. One of them hires out things like surf skis and small sailing boats. There is a golf course, tennis courts, lots of restaurants and many craft stores.
Coochie is a laid back island that has no high rise or chain stores. It is a perfect way to go back in time to a simpler life.
Coochie is great for a day trip, a long weekend or as long as you can get away.
You can get to Coochie using the car or passenger ferry from Victoria Point.
