What you need will depend on the type of travel you plan to do. Anything from a backpack to a suitcase is fine.

If you're travelling in summer, you'll need a good supply of cool clothing. The weather can be hot and humid so shorts, t-shirts and singlet tops are the best way to go. Some nights in summer can be cooler so some jeans/long pants and a light sweater may be useful. Also pack some cool, comfortable shoes or sandals - you'll be a lot more comfortable in the summer heat. Summer is also known for thunderstorms, so bring an umbrella or some wet weather gear if you'll be outdoors. A hat and sunglasses are also important. Spring and autumn (fall) are more mild, with warm days and cooler nights. A mixture of long pants and shorts with t-shirts and a jacket should be enough. Some closed in shoes as well as sandals will also be useful. Winter can get cool, with the minimum temp sometimes reaching 2 degrees C in the early morning (the mountain areas get much cooler). Bring some warm jumpers/jackets, a scarf, some good shoes and something to cover your head. Some t-shirts would also be useful for warmer days.

Sunblock is a must for Queensland weather, particularly if you're skin isn't used to powerful sun. It can take less than 10 minutes to get burnt here, and you often don't notice until hours later. Sunburn and the summer heat is a nightmare so be prepared to pack on the sunblock. If you'll be outdoors, especially in humid/ damp areas, insect repellant is also important. Moisturiser is useful if you're outdoors a lot. If you'll be hiking, bring some salt for the leeches, as well as some bandaids, antiseptic cream, and basic first aid supplies, particularly if you'll be away from shopping areas, where toiletries and medical supplies are readily available.

There is an endless supply of scenery to photograph in Australia, ranging from beaches to deserts to rainforests. If you're going to remote areas, I'd advise you bring extra batteries/ tapes/ film for your camera. Be aware that some areas will be very hot and humid, which may have an effect on photographic equipment.

  • I went for 3 weeks, took a small duffel bag and a small backpack. I was visiting family, so didn't have to worry about where to stay etc, and didn't want to check any luggage lest I then be forced to stand watching the carousel for half an hour at the other end!

Travellers from England should keep in mind that winter temperatures in Brisbane average 2oC WARMER than the same day ('summer' day) in London, and should pack LIGHT jackets. If you are travelling in summer, take fans. No, seriously, take a LOT of sunscreen, plenty of long, loose clothing, sandals an absolute must (please GOD no socks), and be aware that every 3-4 days we have a massive electrical storm with thunder, strobe-effect lightning and torrential horizontal rain/wind. :>

sunscreen. can I say it again? I think I will... SUNSCREEN. Australia has one of the highest skin-cancer rates in the world, due mainly no doubt to the great big gaping hole in the ozone layer which the Yanks and the other big industrialised nations have created but which centred over us instead of somewhere more deserving in the Northern Hemisphere...

keep in mind if from northern climes that bright sunlight sometimes INcreases the need for a flash, particularly if taking pictures of the native inhabitants. The background glare is often so high that when the camera over-compensates for it and dulls down the picture it also reduces the person at the front of your photo to a featureless silhouette - this effect significantly worsens as the skin tones of the subject darken.

    a relaxed attitude, and possibly the slightest smidgen of cultural awareness so that (if American) you are not offended by our easy-going tendency to insult each other in public and (if English) you don't offend by calling anyone a 'convict' or a 'colonial' within hearing distance. :}

  • As with any travelling... light is the way to go. Although, I have seen people on the trains with 3 bags a piece... so if you wanna try it...

Brisbane weather is always really nice. But i'd recommend taking a cardi even if you're coming over in summer... because night times can get a little chilly.

You can basically get anything you want here.

BIG TIP... you'll hear this everywhere but... SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS!!!!!!! also... watch out for blue bottles.

  • a backpack is fine to travel with as there are so many backpackers around that every one is geared up for them.

thier are three main items of clothing you will need :- t-shirts, shorts and SWIMMERS.

plenty of sun cream as you can get burnt far to easly and it will make your trip unforgetable for the wrong reasons.

you can purchase a under water camera for around $18.00 and it is well worth it as you can see by some of my photo's

  • Summers in Brisbane can be very HOT (esp. in December/ January). Now why do I ALWAYS choose to go on vacation during the HOTTEST months? Duh! Also, Queensland (the state) is more often than not SUNNY and is very unlike Sydney/ Melbourne weather. So, what would I recommend a regular tourist/ traveler to pack along for a summer holiday in Queensland? Light cotten dresses with sphagetti straps. :-)

Ladies, DON'T forget to transfer all your Clarifying toners and astringents, foaming cleansers, night creams like Vibrant, Advanced Night Repair et al into small plastic containers - to save luggage space.

I usually bring along TWO types of cameras with me and load them with TWO different types of films i.e. ASA200 film (for day) and the high speed Kodak 800 film for museums or places that do not allow flash photography.

DON'T forget to bring along your much-treasured ATM card to withdraw cash. Yes, no need to rush to the money-changers to change all your currencies into Australian dollars before your trip. Just ensure that you adhere to the following steps: 1. Flip to the back of your local ATM card, do you see the logos 'Cirrus', 'Plus', 'The Exchange' etc on it? 2. If the answer is 'yes', then you have absolutely nothing to worry about! 3. Why? Because you can withdraw cash from any ATM machines in U.S.A., no matter how obscure the town you're at is. 4. If you use this method, you'd also save alot on the interbank exchange rates. Why? Because you're using your OWN money. DO NOT, I repeat - DO NOT withdraw from your Visa/ Mastercard credit card account(s) because that would be considered as a CASH ADVANCE and you'd be slapped with a hefty fee! If you change your local currency into Australian dollars via a money changer, you will also be charged much, much more (by them) compared to when you're using YOUR own ATM card overseas. (Read: Low interbank wholesale rate offered ONLY to banks). Trust me. I work for an American bank. I've personally used this method hundreds of times before and so far, no ATM machines in this world have failed me.... yet. Yes, even at the remotest village in Africa! :-)) I promise. 'The border means more than a customs house, a passport officer, a man with a gun. Over there everything is going to be different. Life is never going to be quite the same again after your passport has been stamped!' - Graham Greene (British Writer); b. 1904

  • If you come here is summer, bring very light clothing, a good pair of walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a good shade hat. In winter, not much more than summer - A couple of pullovers and jeans or slacks. Winter is generally mild although prone to a really cold snap for a few days (really cold for us is around 10 degrees celcius) Can get as high as 40c in summer.

    General: weather
Brisbane has a fabulous truly comfortable sub-tropical climate ideal for outdoor enjoyment all-year round that averages 245 days of fine and sunny weather each year. Brisbane has an average rainfall of about 1400mm annually, the majority of which falls in the summer period. Daytime temperatures on the coastal strip are generally in the twenties (Centigrade). In winter clear skies and drier air are associated with cool nights and light frosts may occasionally occur, especially in the mountains.

Like anywhere you go in Australia regardless of season, bring your sunblock and your sunnies (it doesn't matter if they are designer sunglasses or not as long as it will protect your eyes from the sun)!!
