Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo: AUSSIE ZOO
  • Tip Rating:
  • Steve Irwin's Australian Zoo is top of many peoples list of places to visit. It's not cheap ($43 adult) so make sure you've got plenty of time to wander around the whole zoo and enjoy your time there.
It's a very professionally run place as you realise from the moment you enter the car park. You are directed to the parking area by a person....not just a sign.
Make sure you get a map as you enter, saves you wandering aimlessly. Also enables you to plan your day around the show times.
We were drawn to the crocodile show by the noise. The "CROCOSEUM" is a huge stadium area (would hate to be there if it was full). Unfortunately we didn't see Steve Irwin himself, but those guys handling the crocs were great anyway. Very informative.

Check on the net for discount vouchers...they are there!! Try googling "australia zoo+discounts" . I printed the vouchers out, took them with me and threw the staff into confusion, but I got the discount :)

    Southbank: South Bank at night
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was in the South Bank (Kangaroo Point, to be exact) to rock climb one night, and found out that place had a good view of the opposite shore's (Brisbane City) skyline.
There were also people having barbeque at night, with no street light and hand torch only. Quite an interesting experience, it should be.

The main campus of the University of Queensland is at St Lucia - and is arguably the most beautiful campus in Australia. It occupies a site covering 274 acres, and is located along the Brisbane River. The original university, established in 1909, was located in the city, the current site of Gardens Point campus of the Queensland University of Technology.

Due to the need for more space, the university reluctantly accepted land for the St Lucia campus from Dr James and Emelia Mayne - reluctant, due to the bad reputation this very wealthy Irish immigrant family had, courtesy of their father, Patrick's, alleged murder of a man in 1849 - which was the source of his founding money to start a butchery business in Queen Street Brisbane. I have summarised the story of the "Mayne Mystery" as an Off the Beaten Path tip for anyone interested in murder and mayhem! Anyway, under pressure of need, the university did accept the land, and the beautiful campus was born.

James and Emelia Mayne were the last 2 of 6 never married children of Patrick and Rose Mayne, and were Queensland's most generous benefactors - active in a wide ranging area of charities and social/cultural developments. They were decent folk, who worked hard and were very generous, and contributed much to Brisbane. Sadly, they are little known, credited or honoured for their work.

Mayne Hall was opened in honour of the Mayne family in 1972 - and the university continues to derive an income as a legacy of the vast holdings of this wealthy family.

The campus itself is dominated by the central Great Court - a large open area surrounded by Art Deco style sandstone buildings, with distinctive gargoyles and heritage listen cloisters. The campus also has extensive sports fields and facilities, gardens, duck ponds and a bicycle track from the city. It is a beautiful sprawling affair, and well worth a wander.

A huge tip is that the pizza restaurant at the Schonell Theatre has the best I've have ever eaten - even in Italy. It has been there for decades!

    Circuit the city by foot
  • Tip Rating:
  • We often drive the 30 minutes to Brisbane on a Sunday morning, park at Southbank, and venture on a 7 km walk around the city, along the walking paths which circuit this area. Starting in the Southbank Parklands, and walking around the Brisbane River, along with dozens of walkers, joggers and cyclists - and occasional rockclimbers - we meander along, cross the Story Bridge walkway and loop back past Riverside.

There are Sunday morning markets along Riverside, where there are many places to stop for coffee and breakfast, shop or browse at the markets, and slow the pace a little.

Beyond Riverside, the pathway continues through the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, along this side of the river. There are mangrove pathways along the river, or you can stick with the greenery, pools and prettiness of the gardens themselves.

From the Botanical Gardens, the Goodwill Bridge returns the walker to Southbank - or, if you are city bound, walk back past Parliament House and back into the city.

There are plenty of things to see and do along the way, as well as points of historical inerest, artwork and just watching the locals doing their early morning exercise!

Walk takes a few hours, and a great start to the day.

    Southbank: Southbank
  • Tip Rating:
  • Southbank is a definate 'must see'. This was all new to me :o) How unusual,.... a beach right in the city!! And it's only a short walk across the bridge from the CBD. We really enjoyed our wander through this lovely place. Don't think I'd like to swim there though,....bit crowded for my liking :o)

City Hall: Brisbane City Hall - lights and all!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Building of Brisbane's City Hall was completed in 1930, at the cost of nearly 1,000,000 pounds - and remains the grandest of Australia's city halls. There was a degree of criticism about the expence of the building in Brisbane - a mere outpost in Australia! But it has stood the test of time. Looking over King George Square, the city hall is an impressive and immediately identifiable building in Brisbane. The square hosts many peaceful demonstrations, markets, visiting tent taverns (at the moment), and the buildings facilities are much used by the public of Brisbane.

Fortitude Valley & Valley Markets: Saturday Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beads at the Valley Markets - Brisbane
    Beads at the Valley
    Markets
    by Colzy

The Valley Markets are THE Brizzy Markets to head to on a Saturday for fashion crafts and homewares. The Fortitude Valley area has a reputation (probably a very accurate one and certainly earned) of being a little more alternate and eccentric compared to the rest of Brisbane. Their version of the Markets certainly reflects this and the goods you will find there have a kind of offbeat feel to them and in most cases are unique.

If you combine your trip to the markets with a cheap brekky/brunch at one of the many cafes along the strip, you will be in for a good day.

Fortitude Valley is only 1km from the CBD and features some fantastic nightclubs and restaurants and is a great place just to 'hang out' and people watch. There is usually something of interest happening there and its very easy to get to because of the many differeent transport options.

    Southbank: Free things to do
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is what I try to do at least once a week or once a fortnight.
It is great to throw on your blades or skates and spend the day skating along the Brisbane River at Southbank.

It is free (unless you do not have blades). But you can hire them from locations along the River from $4.00 (depending how long you want them etc).

The paths are all flat and it is such a beautiful and relaxing way to see the city.

Here is a real local tip:
If you are driving into the city it can be really expensive to park there all day, so what I do is go pay for a $5.00 movie ticket at Southbank Cinema and I get to park all day for free :)

Or you can park in the actual Southbank Parking for free if you spend $30 or more at lunch in Southbank (dont forget to validate your ticket!! lol)

The old Windmill: Brisbane's Oldest Surviving Building
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located on top of the hill in Wickham Park this windmill constructed by convicts in 1828 to grind flour and maize meal as food for the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. The mill operation ceased in 1842, however the mill has had a variety of uses since then, including Signal Station, Fire Lookout, and pioneer radio and television broadcasting experiments. Adjacent to the mill remains the water resovoirs. Entry to the mill is available at specific times, it was closed at the time we visited.

We were in for a shock when we went to park our car after checking into the Astor Metropole Tower Apartments. It was our first experience parking on the stacker system. This one operated like a lift, you found a vacant parking spot and then pressed the button to move the
parking space down to road level, then drove into the spot. A very tight space and for anyone much taller than your car you will have trouble walking from your car. After the initial shock, the system was very efficient.
