Treasury Casino: Gamble in the Treasury Building - hmmmm........
  • Tip Rating:
  • This magnificant old building has probably been saved from a dreadful fate by being taking in hand by Conrad - Casino Conrad that is. The complex occupies the original Brisbane Treasury Building plus the Lands Administration Building, providing accommodation.

There are 96 rooms available for accommodation, and no 2 rooms are alike. There have been a number of awards won since opening in April 1995.

The opulent casino constructed around the retained ornate collonades and sandstone walls boasts a 6 storey atrium. There is a 3 level gaming emporium, comprising of 80 gaming tables and over 1300 gaming machines.

An interesting place to walk through - never rest my addictive bones at these things!

The casino is well placed, in the middle of the city - and walking distance to or from any of the major city sites, and there is a ferry stop just across the road.

By the way, the hands up in the second picture are people telling me NOT to take photographs! I'm no gambler, and I really didn't know the rules!

    ChinaTown: Chinatown

  • Chinatown, Fortitude Valley - Brisbane
    Chinatown, Fortitude Valley

Brisbane's Chinatown Mall was established in 1987 in Duncan St, Fortitude Valley, an area where Asian traders had long been based. The Mall was refurbished in 1996, with rotunda's, pagoda's and lions in the style of the Tang Dynasty. A water garden was also added, with the fountain and pond symbolising good fortune. Chinatown is the hub of Asian trade in Brisbane, with a variety of supermarkets, restaurants, trinket and clothing shops, Chinese medicine specialists and markets on the weekends. During Chinese New Year, the area comes alive with celebrations and performances. If you're after a Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai or Korean meal, Chinatown and the surrounding area has a myriad of delicious choices.

Some people might recognise Chinatown from some scenes in Jackie Chan's movie First Strike.

Parallel to the Chinatown Mall is the Brunswick St Mall, which has markets on Saturday's and a variety of pubs and restaurants worth looking at. A short drive away is New Farm Park, which is great for a barbecue or to kick a footy around. There is also a nice river walk and an expensive cafe.

    Southbank: Southbank
  • Tip Rating:
  • Southbank is a definate 'must see'. This was all new to me :o) How unusual,.... a beach right in the city!! And it's only a short walk across the bridge from the CBD. We really enjoyed our wander through this lovely place. Don't think I'd like to swim there though,....bit crowded for my liking :o)

The second biggest attraction was the kangaroos. Perhaps being too close to their more attended neighbours, these kangaroos were just as unenergetic. They laid stilly on the ground, possibly hunched slightly if someone was trying to feed them. The only time a kangaroo would hop was to either find some leftover food, or changed a site to continue its nap.

City Hall: Classic City Hall on The Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • An easy walk from the Queen Street Mall to this fine building overlooking a large square which was being renovated during our visit. We went inside the building and spent some time in the museum, free entry.

Brisbane is a city of bridges. There are four bridges crossing Brisbane River, namely William Jolly Bridge, Victoria Bridge, Goodwill Bridge and Story Bridge. They are of different structural forms and materials. For example, William Jolly Bridge is an arch structure while Story Bridge is a steel cantilever bridge.

One of the reasons I love Brisbane so much is its bridges and the river. Right, I'm crazy about bridges.

Among all the bridges, I love Story Bridge the most. It's just gorgeous at night. Go to Riverside Pier and feel how I feel.

    Riverfire Fireworks Display
  • Tip Rating:
  • The annual fireworks display is held on the first Saturday of September and is a huge event with people securing the best viewing points from mid morning. The fireworks are spread along the river in the Southbank area and I believe approximately half a million people attended. The fireworks are brilliant and go for 30 minutes, the crowds were generally well behaved. We managed to get a position on one of the bridges near Southbank, however the best views would be from the riverside hotels, apartments, and restaurants which I presume are booked many months in advance.

    Mt Cootha: Mt. Coot-ha
  • Tip Rating:
  • The mountain is surrounded by the 220 hectare Mt Coot-tha reserve which is an oasis of natural bushland and native wildlife. The Taylor Range of which Mt Coot-tha is a part, forms a backdrop of hills to the city of Brisbane.
Besides the panoramic views over the city of Brisbane at the hilltop lookout, Mt. Coot-ha offers some light trails for causal trekking.

    Origin of name
In 1880, the area formerly known as the "One Hill Tree" was declared a Public Recreation Reserve and it's name was officially changed to Mt Coot-tha. The original name was derived by virtue of a solitary Eucalypt tree that stood at this southern most point on an otherwise bare knoll. The adopted name 'Coot-tha' or 'Kuta' was taken from the Aboriginal name for the area which meant 'honey' or 'the place of wild honey'.
