 | | | | City Hall: City Hall and King George Square | | | | | |
Brisbane's City Hall is a large sandstone building in the centre of the city. It is located on King George Square, just a few metres from the central train station. The clocktower stands 95m tall and it is possible to take a lift up to the top to take in the panoramic views. The lift is free of charge and a guide tells you a few facts about the building on the way up and down. From the top, there are excellent views over King George Square and across the skyline of the CBD. However, the tall buildings of the CBD restrict any long distance views. The clocktower only opens from 9am - 3pm, and I caught the final lift to the top at 2:55pm, so my stay at the top was rather rushed - but I was up there as the 3pm bells deafeningly rang out!! The ground floor of the City Hall houses the Museum of Brisbane and the Brisbane City Gallery (see separate tip), both of which are free to enter. The staff on the information desk are very friendly and helpful and they can provide you with brochures, fliers and city maps and answer any questions you might have. There is also a gift shop in the City Hall. King George Square, located in front of the City Hall, is a spacious square with a few patches of grass amongst the concrete. It is a popular place for the workers from the nearby CBD to sit and enjoy their lunches, while groups of teenagers sunbathe on the grass. A few statues are dotted around the square, including one outside the City Hall featuring two kangaroos in what appears to be some form of city or state emblem. City Hall is a main tourist spot in Brisbane. Admission is free, and there is a museum on the bottom level of life in Brisbane. For a small fee (around $1 or so) you can take the lift up to the top of the clock tower and have a view of Brisbane. The view is alright, not as spectacular as you would expect though, because there are other buildings higher than the clocktower, that kind of block some of the view. Leave a Comment

City Hall is an old building with a high steeple. The front of the building says museam, but do not think this is an ordinary museam with artifacts and things, it is really a very boring arts museam, the real museam is over the bridge. You can pay to go up to the bell tower, where you get a very good view of the city, though the day I was in Brisbane it was free for some reason. You ride an elevator like the ones you see in the movies, those old ones with a bored looking bellhop and a sliding cage sort of door. The ride is really quite fun and when you get to the top you can walk around and look out over the city through glass windows. Giant bells above you peal out the time every so often (half hour maybe?). A good place to go for a nice view of the city, even if it is of mostly sky scrapers.
