Fraser Island Sand Tobogganing
Fraser island is a huge sand island off the cost of Brisbane. The island has miles of beaches, and can only be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles. The trip was fun, although a bit rushed, with the highlight being the sand tobogganing. Not an overly adrenaline-inducing, but fun nonetheless. Just bring lots of water, and beware the hike back up. A brave Scottish woman brought her like 5-year-old daughter with her. When the daughter wanted to go again (laying on the mother's back), they got stuck half way up. I of course charged over, picked up the girl and tobaoggan, and carried them up the slope at a charge. Needless to say, I nearly died of a heat stroke after reaching the top...haha...

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. Covering over 160 000 hectares, it is located off the Queensland coast about four hours north of Brisbane. The attractions of Fraser include rainforests, pristine lakes, surf beaches, huge sand blows, cliffs of coloured sands, crystal clear streams and vast stretches of mangroves. See my travelogue under Queensland for more information and pictures.
Take a trip to Fraser Island!
This is the largest sand island in the world, home to many of Australia's unique flora and fauna. Fortunately, this island has barely been touched since Australia was colonised and you'll literally feel like you're out in the middle of no where. There are many tours available, plus camp grounds, the odd resort and beach house, and the beaches are incredible!

Fraser Island is a must see,...
Fraser Island is a must see, even if you don't intend to go to the Reef.
When people in Queensland talk about going to visit an island. They usually refer to one of the smaller islands along the GBR (The Reef). There are numerous such islands. Heron island is one of them. The Witsundays are pretty popular. You can easily find out about these theings contacting a tourist info centre.
Fraser island is a very big island, and you don't really feel secluded or isolated on this island. That said, it is a very good holiday spot. Situated on the southern end of the GBR, it is very close to Queensland Capital Brisbane. I think you can catch a ferry from Noosa, or some where near that.
The island is made entirely of sand. White sand that is. Very beautiful beach. You can do 4WD on the beach, although such activity is not recommended by the National Park authorities. You cannot, however swim in the sea when you are on Fraser island, especially not on the Pacific side. Because there are many sharks about. The continent side is safer though.
There are many beautiful fresh water lakes on the island where you can swim in. The most famous one is called Lake McKenzie. VERY VERY VERY beautiful. It's unlikely you will find another place like this. (I think it's better than the scences in 'The Beach') Beware of dingoes though, they can be ferocious if you appear too tasty.
There is also a fresh water stream that works like a water slide, a huge sand cliff good for tobogganing, and two places to stay. You can stay or camp on the east side of the island at a camp centre. On the west side of the island there is 'Kingfisher Bay Resort.' Excellent food, accomodation, and tours. It's higher on the price range though.

Go on safari at Fraser Island, the world's biggest sand island!
This beautiful, sandy island with tropical forest and crystal clear lakes is open for safari by jeeps.
We were organised in groups of 8-9 and handed over a map, a jeep, camping gear and pointet towards the ferry to the Fraser Island.
On the island there are some crossing roads, but mostly you get to drive on the looong beaches which are also used as landing for small airplanes!
We had three wonderful days exploring the island and getting to know the people in our group.
Because of sharks we could not take a dip by the wonderful long beaches, but the fresh water lakes were great too.
