    Queensland Art Gallery (QAG)

    by leffe3 Written Sep 16, 2012

Part of the 'cultural island' of South Bank which is made up of QAG, GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art - see separate tip), the Queensland Museum and the Performing Arts Centre.

The Gallery's philosophy is to connect art and people. It is a symbol of the State’s artistic and cultural development and was established back in 1895 as the Queensland National Art Gallery but was something of a peripatetic concept until moving into its current location in 1982.

Whilst collecting innumerable works of art from around the world, the Gallery's collection is particularly known for its Australian and Indigenous work as well as its flagship event, the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, established in 1983 but which, since the opening of GOMA next door 5 years ago, has established an international name for itself.

    Open daily, Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm; Sat-Sun, 9am-5pm
    Entrance free

The Queensland Art Gallery was established in 1895. Architecturally, the Queensland Art Gallery, which moved to its present facility in 1982, is the most acclaimed building of its type in Australia. The symmetry and coherence of its interior spaces are ideally suited to the display and enjoyment of all forms of art.

An outstanding feature of the Gallery is its flexibility in the successfull display of a wide range of visiting exhibitions as well as housing the permanent State Art Collection. The major part of the Collection is devoted to Australian art from colonial times to the present, including painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, decorative arts and crafts. The strength of the Australian collection lies in its broad representation of significant late nineteenth and twentieth century art. The Gallery's International collection, consisting mainly of British and European works, includes acknowledged masterpieces such as Picasso's La Belle Hollandaise.

This is located next to the Queensland Museum, and in here, you will see more Modern Art, but also Australian Art, and when we visited, an Exhibition on Papua & New Guinea which was very interesting.
Not only is this for Adults, but families with children were having fun! Aeroplanes were hanging from the ceiling, and there was huge pile of made up ones, and around the edge, families were sitting making Planes together. What a great idea for a family outing!

FREE, except for special exhibitions and some other programs.
    OPEN.....Monday to Friday 10.00am - 5.00pm
    Saturday and Sunday 9.00am - 5.00pm

The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art holds different exhibitions all year round. You can find out about these by visiting their website.
Some have an admission fee, and others like the one I went to (6th Asian Pacific Tri-annual contemporary art) was FREE.

The Elk, made out of glass was beautiful, I have put the details on photo 4. A photo does not do it justice!

Volunteer Guides will take you on a 30 - 40 min tour to explore the special exhibitions and collection works if you don't wish to have a look on your own.

    OPEN.....
    Monday to Friday 10.00am - 5.00pm
    Saturday and Sunday 9.00am - 5.00pm
