    General: Translink
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council have had the initiative to link the various forms of transport in the city area into an integrated system, where you can buy one ticket for the day (or week) and use it on all transport systems – trains, buses and ferries. As this is written, the cost for a daily ticket for zones 1 and 2 (which covers all my tips, other than “off the beaten path”) will cost you $5.20A . A similar weekly ticket will be $20.80A. The website I have listed below gives all the information you are likely to need for travelling around Brisbane. It even has a trip planner – though I rather feel that will be more use to locals who understand the details than for visitors, who I doubt could be expected to understand the somewhat summarised details.

Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: City Cat, Cheap Brisbane River Cruise

The City Cat is the Brisbane Public Transport system on the river and is a fantastic way to see Brisbane. The boats are large and fast, having both inside and outside seating, we preferred outside with the breeze in our face. Fares are cheap with an all day Off-Peak adult ticket costing Au $3.90 and you can get off and on as often as you like. We travelled on a Saturday afternoon, the day of the RiverFire fireworks spectacular and the river was very busy with all sized craft getting "best position" for the night's entertainment. Saturday is also a good day to view the local sailing clubs in competition. We travelled the full circuit before alighting at Southbank.

General: So much to choose from!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I think Brisbane is very easy to get around. Within the city area and Southbank there are great walking areas. You can jump on a Ferry or the City Cat for a quick trip along the river to various areas. Train travel is convenient to all areas as well as outer Brisbane. You also have the local and outer area buses. When arriving at the Brisbane airport you can get into the city by train or there are a number of bus services to the city areas. There is a desk at the airport that you can buy your tickets and also find accommodation. You can get a bus that takes you to the door of your accommodation. The Transit Centre in Roma Street is the Hub for Greyhound coaches and trains to areas beyond Brisbane. The Transit centre has cafe's and tour desks also. There are a number of lockers at this centre. They are 24 hour lockers. All very convenient for the visitor to Brisbane.

  • Brisbane International terminal - Brisbane

Airports don’t excite most people, only the destinations to which they lead. Some are better than others though. Some are subject to curfews and so on. Brisbane is fortunate to have the newest airport of all major Australian cities: it opened as recently as 1988 and replaced the (adjacent) Eagle Farm airport. There is scope to extend both its runways and terminals, to avoid future congestion – quite important, in view of the large traffic increases. The International Terminal is currently being expanded (see photo). For travellers, a key consideration at Brisbane is that it is not subject to curfews, as is Sydney – this can be an important issue for international flight schedules. Domestically it also is the base for VirginBlue Airline and is well served by both Jetstar, Qantas and regional airlines, and has large modern terminals, so you can travel onwards from here to most Australian destinations with little difficulty. The airport is adjacent to the Gateway Motorway and a rail link provides a connection between terminals (see next tip) and from the airport to the City and to the Gold Coast.

Brisbane Airport: Transfers to/from Brisbane airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Coachtrans minibus at Brisbane airport - Brisbane

I used Coachtrans' airport transfer service to get from Brisbane airport to my accommodation in the Spring Hills area of the city during my visit to Brisbane in April 2006. These minibuses drop each passenger off right outside their chosen accommodation, so there's no need to worry about finding the right place. Each minibus can hold circa 12 passengers and luggage is carried in a separate cart that is towed behind the minibus. Minibuses run from the airport to Brisbane approximately every 30 minutes and the journey time is about 25-30 minutes depending on the number of drop-offs and the location of your accommodation. As at April 2006, the cost of a one-way transfer from the airport to Brisbane was 11 AUD, although, when returning to the airport at the end of my stay I booked this service through my hotel and was charged 15 AUD (I assume the 4 AUD difference was the hotel's commission). By contrast, the Brisbane Air Train would have cost me 12 AUD to Brisbane central station and then I'd have had to pay for a taxi from there to Spring Hills - so this transfer was excellent value for money for me. Tickets are purchased from a kiosk outside the arrivals hall, next to where the minibuses depart from. The company also operates minibuses from the airport to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Tickets are bought from the same kiosk as the Brisbane transfer tickets and the minibuses depart (less frequently) from the same point: Skytrans = airport to Brisbane: Tel (07) 3238 4799 Airporter = airport to Gold Coast: Tel (07) 3238 4700

Car Rentals: Rent a car to take trips in Australia

There are long distances in Australia, so if You would like to explore a region the best way to realize it is to rent a car. If You are from overseas, You cannot pay by cash, You need a credit card! I don't know it's common or not, but it was a rule at the company I chose. If You drive on the right lane in Your resident country, don't worry, there are so many tables on the roads, You cannot miss the lane You have to drive on.

Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: City Cat
  • Tip Rating:
  • The CityCat goes around Brisbane River. It can take you to the University of Queensland. You can see the wonderful views of tall buildings and some Australian homes. You can take a one-day pass, then you can take buses, ferry with unlimited time. It is best way to travel around Brisbane. If you have any problems, you can go to the Tourist Information Center in the middle of the Queens Street Mall. The one-day pass can be purchased from any Newsagent shops.

QLD Rail: Train all compass points around Brissy
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Queensland Rail system in Brisbane travels west as far as Rosewood or Ferny Grove, North as far as Caboolture, East to Eagle Farm and Doomben (or punters!) and South to the Gold Coast. A special service AirTrain, also travels to Brisbane Airport - both domestic and international terminals. This is an efficient and comfortable rail system, with multiple stops, and some express routes, if you are travelling beyond the city.
