Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: Brisbane City Cat
The Citycat and its smaller sisters the Kittycats are fleets of catamaran ferries operated by the city council for public transport. These ferries are high speed transportation up and down the river taking people to all reaches of the Brisbane River.

Many take a ride down the River to Hamilton and Bulimba, or up the river past Towong.

The Citycat is a great way to get a water level view of the brisbane CBD.

Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: CityCat Ferry
This is one of the best way to enjoy brisbane city. Travel along the brisbane river by city-ferry. You can to see southbank, Univeristy of Queensland, QUT, Kangaroo Cliff, etc.

It is cheap and you can use the same ticket for both buses and ferry (citycat)

Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: CityCat at night
Use your City Sights ticket to jump on this ferry (it's free, or rather included), back up the river, at night. Great view of Brisbane skyline at night.

Brisbane Ferry / CityCat: City Cat.
With the City Cat you are going partly up and down the river. If you feel like it, you hop on and off the boat. This is a good way to see more parts of Brisbane.

    Brisbane Airport: Brisbane Airport Skytrains
As with quite a few Australian airports, Brisbane has separate international and domestic terminals. These are separated by a distance of about 1km and movement between the two is by a rail service called the “skytrain” (ie the train travels on elevated tracks).

From both terminals, a lift and escalators connects via walkways to the train platforms – though you might care to note that the lifts are somewhat inadequate when flights arrive and many passengers with bags wish to travel. If you have and can show a Qantas international boarding pass, I understand that the train trip is provided free: if, like us, your international trip is not with Qantas, the fare is $4A for the trip, which seems rather pricey for one km! The alternative would be a taxi, but as I gather that costs about $10, you probably are better off staying with the trains, which run at about an eight minute frequency. Of course, if Brisbane is your destination, the train can take you to the central city – or further on to the Gold Coast.

Second photo: The escalators to “skytrain” level
Third photo: From the walkway, looking toward the platform
Fourth photo: The distant international terminal (the grey building behind the white/red building, to the right of the light pole).

Brisbane Airport: Brisbane Airport by train
Brisbane Airport has an excellent, quick and inexpensive rail connection to the city. However, unlike many airport rail systems which run 'every few minutes' so knowing the timetable is not really important, the Brisbane airport service is not quite as frequent and runs only every 30 minutes at certain times of the day. Check their website for the timetable!

Brisbane's public transport system is well set up. We arrived at the airport and jumped on the Air Train which is an elevated railway that connects the International and Domestic terminals with the main part of Brisbane City. The trains run regularly and are clean. Just follow the signs from the terminals and you buy your ticket at the window at the station.

Tickets are $10 from the airport to the city and if you need to trransfer between terminals you may be able to do it for free (I know you can with a valid Qantas boarding pass, and probably Virgin Blue as well).

This picture is of my brother Owen at the AirTrain international station at the airport.

QLD Rail: Take it Easy, Take a Train
Clean, comfortable and safe - Brisbane
    Clean, comfortable and safe

Brisbane's suburban rail network CityTrain is if you ask me is the cleanest and most comfortable rail network around.

The network mainly services Brisbane's urban sprawl but also includes an express train to the Gold Coast, a link to the Airport (Airlink) and a service to the Sunshine Coast in the north.

Each day thousands use the network to get in and out of the city. Most services run every half hour wih additional services running in the peak hours. Last trains leave central around about 12am Sun-Thu and 1am Fri, Sat.

Fares are based on distance with adult tickets priced at about $A1.50 for a 1 zone ticket. Personally I pay $2.90 for a trip which is about 15 stations away from town (1/2hr from town). Discounts are available for off peak return tickets (after 9:30am weekdays or weekends), weekly tickets upto yearly tickets.

Safety is good. All trains have safety points, many night trains have security guards, and many newer trains have video surveillence.
