Sunburn: Watch the sun!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One problem many people travelling to Brisbane and Australia in general is the sun. Unlike some places in the world, the sun here is very strong and can burn within minutes. If you're going to be outside for the day, it's best to put on sunscreen and wear a hat. Also have lots of water, especially in summer - dehydration and sunstroke are a good way to ruin a holiday. If you're going to be drinking alcohol outdoors, also bear this in mind, - a day in the sun makes a hangover even worse!!

Fortitude Valley: Those "wierdos" aren't dangerous
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Valley used to have a (deserved) bad reputation at night many years ago but that is no longer the case. There is a police station in the mall, very active backpacker accomodations and as the Valley has become more popular there are more people on the street at night which means less lonely alleys. The Valley is more relaxed in clothing and attitudes which is why it is the "alternative" capital of Brisbane. Throw away your blue jeans, collared shirt and brown dress shoes which is the norm in Brisbane. Put on some runners and spend the night dancing to some modern beats.

Fortitude Valley: Fortitude Valley - Safer than houses
  • Tip Rating:
  • You might feel that many people say the Valley is dangerous. While there are a few 'weirdos' generally people will help you if you need a hand - don't expect the same when you go into the City. The Valley is well policed and very well lit - Don't expect the same in the City. You'll find nicer, friendly more open people in the Valley than the City. Don't miss it because you heard bad things!

    Crime: Petty crime
  • Tip Rating:
  • While Brisbane is one of the safer cities, there is still crime and it's common sense to exercise a good degree of caution. There have been some unpleasant events of late, one involving a tourist who was treated rather appallingly by some of our less humanitarian citizens in an attempt to get a card pin number. Use your sense and avoid being overly trusting, going into potentially unsafe/ dark/ isolated places at night. It would be wise to stay out of parks, isolated public toilets and areas where clearly intoxicated people congregate (excluding nightclubs/ pubs). Some of the quiet back streets, the botanical gardens, king george square, fortitude valley and even more public places can be mugging spots. Be especially careful if you're visibly intoxicated. Having said all that, Brisbane is generally a very safe city, so if you exercise caution you should have no hassles. In my 25 years here, I've been fine.

    Funky Storms
  • Tip Rating:
  • Up here we've got some really funky summer storm activity that your really need to be careful around. These storms up until recently, We haven’t had a decent storm in a while, wrecked havoc on the power lines and supplies in and around Brissy. Cumming into summer storm safety procedures are televised on free to air TV so take a little bit of care when the weather looks dodgy. Its better safe than sorry.

    Sunburn: Sunburn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer caused by the sun in the world due to the depletion of the ozone layer. Without protection you will start to burn after 15-20 mins. Sunglasses are a necessity especially while driving or on the water. Wear hats (not necessarily an Acubra) and UV sunscreen and drink lots of water.

As Brisbane is a big city,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • As Brisbane is a big city, there are a few neighbourhoods where not to go to, otherwise itis a safe city and you won't see much trouble, except maybe for an occasionally barfight
