There has been no explanation for the origin of the mystery craters, but these are possibly volcanic origin or result of a meteorite impact. Australian geologists say the area is the roof a subterranean lake that was caused by oil pressure underground, or that it was once the edge of the ocean and is the result of sea action. (The nearest beach is 24 km away.) It is probably impossible to deduce the exact manner of formation.
Mystery craters are located 25km SW of Bundaberg, Queensland. These 35 craters are formed in sandstone and are over 25 million years old. Mystery craters were discovered in 1971.
