The Cock and Bull by dlandt The Cock and Bull is a pub well equipped for watching sporting events. it was here that I came to see the Wallabies duke it out with the All Blacks. This is a bit further out of town, and a little on the local side. What it's known for is huge servings of food. You can't get a burger, but I had a really good shepherd's pie, and other things looked quite tasty as well. Beer is about average, there is an attached restaurant, and they have HUGE TV screens. Although every time I opened my mouth it was apparent I wasn't from Cairns, no one showed the slightest interest in where I was from or cared that I was a tourist in the least, but more than happily talked about the games. Make no mistake, this is a friendly place and one not to be missed.
There isn't a formal dress code, but this isn't a dive. Dress in clean clothes, look respectable, and generally observe everyday etiquette. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: 6 Grove StreetPhone: (07) 40311160

by ATXtraveler One of the things that I had missed about Austin, was that there really wasn't much live music playing down here in Melbourne. Well, that was quickly resolved on our trip to Cairns, as we headed out to the first floor of Gilligan's Backpackers bar where we joined a couple hundred of our closest neighbors and bunk mates to listen to this band rock out. They were severely over-amplified and their lyrics sucked, but hey, there was cold beer, they were rocking out, and the kids were enjoying it. Maybe some day they will be the next Ozzy Ozbourne. Anyway, have fun there at Gilligan's... you never know, you might see me next time!
The only requirement is to make sure you are wearing shoes! Leave a Comment

Shenannigans by ATXtraveler If you are looking for a cold beer with plenty of young drunk hostel guests, than you will probably want to head over to Shenannigan's. I was the only in this particular location to have a beer and use the ATM machine so I could make change for the parking meter, but this place was already pretty full at 5pm. As I pulled money out of the ATM though, I noticed that there were several contests that were on the billboards all of which showed this place absolutely packed to the rafters with people drinking and having a good time... so head on over!
Its Cairns... Shenannigans is open from 10am to 2am, 7 days a week Leave a Comment

Before my visit to Cairns I couldn't find any information about R&B or Hip Hop Nightclubs in Cairns. Now, as i've been there for 2 weeks I know that there is one. It's called Tropos Nightclub. The exact location is at corner Lake & Spence Street. This is the only club where you find proper Hip Hop or R&B Music. It is a good location for Dancing especially on weekends when you are fed up with typical Backpacker Parties such as "Woolshed".
There is no real Dresscode. At least as a Boy you should not wear "thongs" or for europeans "flip flops". Bring your ID because they ID erveryone who wants to enter the club. by ATXtraveler If you are looking for a nice place to unwind with a drink and conversation, then your best bet is to head off to the back bar of the backpacker resort called Gilligan's located in downtown Cairns. It is one of the more relaxed portions of the place, where there is the music of the inside dance club that comes through when the door opens, but just a bit of rowdy style talking going on. I would highly recommend the beer, as it seemed to be extremely affordable before 9pm... three beers only cost 7.50. Drink up until 9pm, when it piles up to 10.50. Leave a Comment

This was my favorite bar in Cairns. It's more for the locals and you can tell from the attitudes of the bartenders - much less pretentious than at PJ O'Briens. And the atmosphere is a lot of fun. If I go back to Cairns, I'd definitely pay this place another visit. Leave a Comment Theme: DancingAddress: 25 Spence Street

by PINKLET Eat, drink, watch people go by. See the Coyote Ugly girls and dance with them on the bar. In the center of the city it's just spot on. The staff is simply the best I have ever met anywhere. The staff here as well got to know me bit too well, asking only if I want a pint of a half (of cider). One day when I was coming from work the doorman said that 'you're late'. When I walked past him to the pub the manager wondered 'where have you been?' At night this cosy pub changes into a nightclub so be aware of the party people

This is a guided bar crawl taking you to 5 bars around town, it takes you from a bar called Piranha where all the girls are given nuts and the guys given bolts in all different sizes, it's an ice breaking game where everyone goes around talking to eachother and trying to find a match. free shots for winners and it gets everyone chatting so a good start to the evening. Then moving on to a sports bar, casino, tavern and leaving you in a nightclub. Free entry to all 5 places and free shos in each, ticket price also includes a t-shirt and a group photo of the whole group. A good night out and a good way to meet fellow travellers. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingDirections: Tickets are sold by reps on the street, but ask around in the hostels for more info as its a fairly popular activity and i think theres also an office you can get tickets from.

Bar/Club, always packed with backpackers out for a laugh. Great atmosphere as always in these places, good music, offers on drinks and cheap food served earlier in the evening. The usual fun, silliness and dancing on tables. Definately worth a visit. Leave a Comment Theme: NightclubDirections: Can't remember but if you ask around in hostels i'd have thought that most people will be able to direct you.

Drinking in the Woolshed by coolbananas It's the most popular backpackers bar in Cairns. From 6 PM till 9 PM you can have a cheap meal, in combination with a voucher from one of the many hostels. After 9 PM the place changes into a bar dancing filled with backpackers. There's a couple of special nights where you can get good drinking deals. On Tuesday night it's 5 for 9 night (five drinks for 9 AUD) and the best night is Thursday: 3 for 5 (3 drinks for 5 AUD). On both nights this is your entrance fee too. You pay the money and get a voucher for the drinks with it, that is if you come in before twelve. After twelve there's no vouchers on sale anymore. The vouchers are valid all night for all kinds of drinks, from a soda to beer to the stronger stuff (e.g. Vodka or Bacardi) My special tip: on Thursday you can buy more than one voucher. This means you can drink cheap drinks all night if you buy a couple of vouchers at the start of the night. and drink cheap drinks for the rest of the night!
Practically anything is allowed in this place, even flip flops. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingDirections: Next to the main square in Cairns, on Shields Street.
