    Shannanagan: Getting upto some shannagan's

    by ChadSteve1975 Written Apr 24, 2005

I visited this place only once while in Cairns. Although the Cairns night scene is big this place was not the place for me. Not enough people to get the vibe going. Admittedly it was early.

Place has a decent stage area towards the back where they were running a compeition for the backpackers. Things like eating dry Wheetbix.
Winners would receive a prize varying from t-shirts to a ride on the slingshot bungee across the road to be taken immediately. Certainly not what I'd prefer for a prize after several drinks.

Dress Code: Cairns is casual. do not overdress is the idea. After all most people out are backpackers.

    The Woolshed: Table Dancing

    by CindyLou99 Written Sep 27, 2005

The Woolshed is probably the craziest place to party in Cairns. They have a menu so you can also catch a bite to eat there. It's always packed with tourists as well as locals and the DJ and hosts are great with getting the crowd to play crazy humiliating games for extra drinks.

By the end of the night, You will be dancing on at least one of the tables for sure. Great place to go and always guaranteed a good time!

Dress Code: Girls can wear pretty much whatever they want. They don't like it when the guys are wearling shorts or sandals. But its not that strict.

    Johno's Blues Bar: Pure fun

by phalangid Updated Feb 21, 2006

This is a really mixed crowd of super friendly people, including Johno himself! Eclectic mix of greenies, businessfolk, and beach bums. Really easygoing and to me anyhow, what Oz is all about, lots of good conversation. Oh, and the music isn't bad either!

    The Tavern: The Tavern

by pmarshuk Written Sep 11, 2003

Just behind the hotel I was in (was the Marriot Courtyard Resort back then, now the Clarion Resort) was Palm Cove's only late night drinking spot.
The Tavern was also a decent bottle shop. This was the place the local bar and restaurant staff went to after closing so it could get quite lively. Quite a large place with pool tables and TV.

    Dress Code: Nothing special

Sports Bar Nightclub & Cafe: Sports Bar NightClub & Cafe

by scharneckk Written Feb 4, 2003

Not my favourite place .. but generally the bar where everyone ended up at the end of the night ...

More dance/techno music as the night goes on .. more people and drinking to be had ..

This place has a cover charge .. student concessions applicable too!

Dress Code: I think they prefer collars here .. wasnt taking that much notice but everyone seemed a little more dressed up here than anywhere else.

Reef Casino: Casino: good fun in a luxurious setting

by coolbananas Written Mar 12, 2003

A nice night out, with a possibility of winning some money! There's all kinds of games, like roulette, blackjack, pokies, etc.

As usual the casino looks very nice: luxurious interior. No matter what your budget is, you can always play some games and try your luck. The roulette table has a minimum bet of AU$2 which makes it available for every traveller...

Dress Code: Not very strict. No flip flops, that's about it.

PJ O'Briens: A nice Irish pub

by coolbananas Updated Mar 12, 2003

PJ O'Briens is a typical Irish pub. I've been told that more than 80% of the interior comes from Ireland. They serve lots of Irish beer and of course the Ozzie beers! The bar staff is very well trained and you never have to wait for a long time.

Twice a week there's a live band (when I was there in June 2002 it was on Tuesdays and Thursdays) playing good music. When there's a special event (like the World Cup) they have a big screen showing the event.

During happy hour they have good deals on jugs of beer (AU$6 for 1,1 litre) and other drinks. They also serve food till 9 pm.

Dress Code: Casual, especially during the day. At night time they're a little more strict, but nothing to worry about. Because of the tropical climate in Cairns there's no strict rules on clothes...

Cairns hotels, restaurant and other buildings in the city, and especially along the Esplanade, are also very nicely lit up at night.
