Day trip check list for hiking/walking

by tropicrd Written Sep 25, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: light weight backpack.

    Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sturdy walking shoes.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Basic first Aid Kit.
    Insect repellent
Always carry at least two litres of drinking water.

    Photo Equipment: Camera and batteries.

    Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Sun block,Hat,water,pocket knife,area map,matches & lighter,torch,compass,tent and accessories.

    Miscellaneous: Flagging tape,Mobile/cell phone,area map,energy snacks.
Always let the park rangers or the police or locals know where you are heading, many lives are saved when people go off the walking tracks and get lost.
The tropical cclimate is very hot and humid so please plan your day trip accordingly.
Be careful of some vegetation when hiking/walking as the forests have wait- a-while palms and the stinging trees that contain a toxin that stings and lasts for weeks. It is very painful.
Lots of plants, vines and fruits of the forest are poisonous and need to be handled with care. Be on the look out for snakes and other species including the Southern Cassowary, stay still or back off slowly and allow them to pass rather than trying to make contact with them,it is their natural habitat.
Please take your rubbish with you and if you need to go to the loo, make sure you cover it over with soil or leaves.During the wet season the tracks can be very muddy and slippery

The sun is not your friend!

Luggage and bags: Due to the warm/hot climate - travel as lightly as possible whilst seeing the sights.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Anything light and breezey in summer (cotton). Definitely bring a hat or buy one when you get here. Sandles are okay for shoes - just be careful, if your feet get tanned/sunburnt then the pattern of your sandle will stay on your feet.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: I cannot stress enough the importance of sunscreen in Cairns! Especially if you are from a place where the climate isn't always so hot. Mosquito repellent will also come in useful in the summer months.

    Miscellaneous: Water bottle!

Luggage and bags: You are much better hiring fishing gear when you arrive.
A plastic bucket for fishing gear and a bag to hold drinks/food etc.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Shorts,t/shirts,a sun cap/hat,swimming costume if area is safe for swimming.A plastic rain poncho and a light sweater.
Rubber thongs/flipflops or water proof sneakers.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sun screen protection, drinking water and a small ist aid kit just in case. Prescribed medication,puffers/inhalers if needed.
Please Note:Whatever you do DON'T let your children go into the water..not even the beaches unless they have stinger nets and or life guards---Cairns and areas are CROCODILE habitats.A fully charged mobile/cell phone for emergency calls--police,ambulance,fire brigade, sea rescue--- ring 000

Photo Equipment: Camera preferably waterproof and batteries.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Fishing rods and fishing tackle, bait etc, suitable for children. Camping tents and equipment if allowed to camp in a camping area. Most important is a fish measuring ruler. The local tackle shop found around Cairns have copies of the tides with the legal fish sizes on the back.

Miscellaneous: Food and drink for the family, keep fishing trips as short as possible as children can get bored can choose a place near a playground or park.Use small hooks so your little ones are more likely to catch a fish but remember to throw it back as it may be undersize.
Encourage your children to read the warning signs.

Fishing is great fun. Safety tips for family fishing. Strong running tides. Please respect the safety signs. Crocodile territory and high tide cut off.

Summer clothes are required all year round

Luggage and bags: Don't bring to much luggage, you won't need much in this tropical climate...

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Open shoes, shorts, t-shirts. In other words: everything you'd wear on a hot summer day.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Insect repellent

Photo Equipment: The usual stuff. Maybe an underwater camera for a boat trip to the reef. But you can always buy that in Cairns.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: No beach in Cairns, but since November 2002 there's a lagoon with a man-made beach. Most hotels and hostels have a swimming pool, so bring your beach towel and swimmers!

Miscellaneous: Be prepared for a hot climate, especially in the wet season (November/December till March/April). The biggest problem about the climate is the humidity in the wet season. The best time to visit Cairns is between May and October.

Luggage and bags: Depends how long you decide to go, I would recommend packing light. A small suitcase would be good or even just a big bag.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Dresses, t-shirts, skirts, shorts, bathers, sandles, maybe a light jacket which you probably won't use.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Normal stuff, Toothbrush, painkillers etc

Photo Equipment: Underwater camera for sure because if you visit Cairns you need to visit the The Great Barrier Reef and you need photos of course. Also a video camera and maybe a normal camera ( I reccomend a digital but if you don't have one a normal plain one would be good.) You can by underwater camera for around $15 dollars to around $30 dollars (disposable).

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Well since its beachy I would recommend sunscreen, hats, long t-shirts to keep the sun off but I do recommend LOTS AND LOTS OF sunscreen, sunglasses and hats.

Miscellaneous: Bring yourself and you adventureous nature.
