The shops on the Esplanade close fairly early, but if you still want to do a little shopping you can go to the Chinese Night Market. Closed during the day, the stalls here are mostly full of souveniers and stuff, but you can find arts and crafts of a higher caliber as well as certain sweets and delicacies. The waterfront end of the market has a group of fast food restaurants if you get hungry or poor.
Postcards, knick knacks, beachwear, that kind of thing

Me buying mud bugs by dlandt This is a large market where vegetables and other produce is sold. There is a limited amount of other merchandise, but the focus is really on the produce. You need to walk a few blocks away from the wharf and more touristy areas to access the market, but it might be worth it if you are preparing your own food like we were.
I bought mud bugs here, as well as a few other things. Its all farm fresh, from eggs to spinach to "capsicum", the Australian term for green peppers.

by bijo69 The Night Markets are located at the Esplanade and as the name suggests they open quite late at 5pm and close at midnight every night.
If you're looking for souvenirs from Oz, this is one of the places to shop. You'll find all kinds of beach clothing, püsch koalas and kangaroos and so on. Besisdes you can also get a Chinese massage and sample some yummy Asian food.
My impression was that most items were less expensive than average. Leave a Comment

While there are a couple of small convenience stores in Palm Cove, amuch cheaper alternative for food and drink is to catch the local bus to Smithfield where there is a small shopping plaza with both Coles and Wollworth's supermarkets, and discount liquor stores. The supermarkets will deliver to your unit for a small charge, provided your order is in by 2pm. There are also signs indicating that a Coles Supermarket will be built at nearby Clifton Beach. The Pier Marketplace, located where else but the pier, has plenty of shops and restaurants. You can find pretty much whatever you need here. I got a good deal on an Akubra hat at the hat store. This is also a place to book tours. On the lower level, there are tour companies with counters set up to book anything from reef tours to skydiving. by ATXtraveler I arrived into Cairns on a Saturday afternoon and while looking for my accommodation for the evening, I ran across this nice little Fruit and Vege market called Rusty's, which is located just next to Gilligan's hostel. I was impressed with this little market, which gets most of its produce from the local Atherton Tablelands. It had many varieties of international fruit, and most of them I had never even heard of! It is only open on Friday and Saturdays, so make sure you stock up when you can!!

This is a large shopping complex that has something like 86 shops to explore. You can do clothes shopping or eat at some of the cafe's, shoes, perfume and a couple of Supermarkets thrown in! There is also a large Target store and Myer store. This is fully airconditioned and is open 7 days a week. Late night shopping is on Thursday. There is also a Food Hall, Macca's to Healthy stuff!! So if you need some extra retail therapy head here. This complex is in the city area. It is west of the Esplanade. You can walk to this from most areas of Cairns inner city. There is also a Taxi rank outside the main entrance. Also a bus stop outside this complex. So where ever you are staying you can make it for a therapy session.
Anything your heart desires!!

by vtveen Strolling around Cairns and Kuranda we ‘discovered’ three galleries from three different photographers. And it was really amazing to see their beautiful photographic images of the natural landscapes in Australia. They were so fascinating and superb !! Even if you are not interested in buying something it is interesting just to browse in one of these galleries and to enjoy the beauty of these pics (and the diverse Australian scenery). Just stroll around and you will find the galleries: Peter Lik Gallery 4 Shields Street, Cairns www.peterlik.com Ric J. Steininger Gallery 63 Abbott Street, Cairns www.steininger.com.au Peter Jarver Gallery Coondoo Street, Kuranda www.peterjarver.com
You can buy every picture you can imagine: small, big, huge, framed, postcard, calendar or book. We decided to buy Peter Lik’s book about the ‘Great Barrier Reef’ with pictures I never could make by myself.
