Tropical Zoo, Cairns
If you like animals, then you must check out the Cairns Tropical Zoo, which is actually located in the city of Palm Cove. It's not like any Zoo that we have ever been to. They don't have the large enclosures like they do at other zoos, no clear glass blocking you, so you can get super close to all the animals such as wombats, cassowary, crocodiles, kangaroos, dingos and of course the beloved koalas. It's a fairly small zoo so you can pretty much see everything in a couple of hours. They also allow you the opportunity to hold a koala, which of course I did, for an additional $18 AUD, which included a commemorative photo, which I thought was well with the price! You get about a minute to cuddle the koala while they take your photo, if you have someone with you, they allow you to take your own pictures, which came out better than theirs.
We had a rental car and drove to the Zoo from our hotel, which was about a 15 minute drive. They do have pickup available that you can arrange from almost every hotel or activities vendor in the area.
If you do have a car, as well as the time, I highly recommend a visit to the town of Palm Cove after your zoo trip. It is the most beautiful, quaint little beach town that I have seen. The main drive is lined with small boutique hotels, shops and great restaurants. MORE ON THIS IN A SEPARATE PALM COVE TIP, TO BE LINKED.
While in Cairns I took the opportunity to visit this popular zoo that has some really great attractions ...Whenever I can when travelling, I always try to get to the local Zoo..Being an animal lover these are always also a great photo opportunity that are some times hard to obtain in the wild...The large saltwater ("salties")Crocodiles in Cairns zoo are no exception..There are many exhibits including a great snake and reptile collection mostly Australian.."deadlies"
