Tropical Zoo, Cairns
While in Cairns I took the opportunity to visit this popular zoo that has some really great attractions ...Whenever I can when travelling, I always try to get to the local Zoo..Being an animal lover these are always also a great photo opportunity that are some times hard to obtain in the wild...The large saltwater ("salties")Crocodiles in Cairns zoo are no exception..There are many exhibits including a great snake and reptile collection mostly Australian.."deadlies"
The main reason for a visit to the Zoo in Cairns was our wish to see some of the typical Australian wildlife species and specially these koala’s. And just behind the entrance are the koala houses with a lot of this cute little ‘bears. Almost unmoving and sitting/lying in a kind of trees under a strange coloured roof, which did make it almost impossible to take a picture.
The Zoo offers a so called ‘Cuddle a Koala’ session, where a photographer takes pictures from visitors together with a koala. We didn’t do, because it must be very unnatural for these animals to act like a ‘model’. Besides we would have to queue and pay a lot of money for such a pic.
Better make your picture of one of the koala’s in an open air house - close to the kangaroos - with good light conditions.
During a ‘crocodile show’ it was amazing to see how fast these apparent lethargic animals react on the provocations by their attendants. It is a miracle these people do still have their both hands !! After seeing a bunch of kangaroos (afterwards almost the only kangaroos we did see in Australia), we finished our visit to the Zoo and still doubt if it was worth the money !!
