On the way from Cairns to Chillagoe or back, you can stop at the Lappa Museum. Lappa is a town even smaller than Chillagoe and its old pub was changed to a crazy museum. It has all kind of old stuff in it, and when you drive past - why not stop and check it out.
No entry fee, it's just an old house that is open for everybody.

As I said in the intro, Chillagoe was once a prosperous mining town, mining copper and giving work to thousands of men. This work was really hard because it was dangerous and also because of the high temperatures in the outback. Due to this many men died not even being forty years old...
You can see the mines from outsides, it is all ruins and quiet eerie, but it's worth a visit if you are in the area.
I found the copper mines very interesting because this is a part of Queensland history that you do not often hear of.
If you have a car, you can just go here, there is no entry fee. Please check if you need a 4WD, as I do not know that. And please watch out if you have children with you, as the mines are not secured and it could be dangerous!

These are some beautiful limestone caves near Chillagoe that you can enter with a guided tour. Our guide was very nice, so the tour was very enjoyable. There are several tours to choose from, 3/4 hour, 1 hour or 1 hour 30 min.
The caves were formed because millions of years ago, when all this was still a big ocean, there was a coral reef right here. Thus, the caves are 400 mio years old.
You can book the tours in the Chillagoe Hub or, if you do not have a car, take a guided day trip from Cairns.

Opposite the Hub you find this small church, a typical white and wooden Australian country church. I think they are beautiful and well worth a look at.
