Step 3: Have a look to the Island map

by Tripack Updated Aug 18, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    You are here...

Dunk is a continental island located in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which is a World Heritage Area. The island consists of 730 hectares of National Park plus 240 ha. occupied by Dunk Island Resort and a small farm.

The Island's green-clad slopes rise gently from golden sand beaches and crystal blue sea to the modest 271 metre high Mt Kootaloo. Despite its relatively low profile the island receives enough rain to support prolific vegetation.

Thirteen kilometres of walking track encourages exploration of most of the island's many habitats and provide an introduction to some of its diversity of animal life. The walks in the National park are very beautiful. All the walking trails start this side of the resort and there are signs that lead you to the walking tracks. As you go through the Resort please keep to the walking tracks.

The walk from the jetty to the Swinging Bridge will take you 15-20 minutes. If you are more energetic you can continue up to the top of Mt Kootaloo that large mountain there is a viewing platform and you can get some magnificent views of the islands and the surrounding areas. From the jetty to the top of Kootaloo and back to the jetty is a return trip of about 2 hours.

Step 1: Access to the Dunk Island safely...

    Safe Tripack Onboard

You will have two choice to access this exclusive Island by boat or by plane. I choose the boat which was enjoyable cruise with paradisiac sceneries. What a change compare to my last Swiss lake cruise on a paddle steam boat...

I start my cruise from Cardwell which make my maritime journey longer.

Dunk Island is situated 4.5km offshore from the small coastal town of Mission Beach . The shortest way to get on the Island by boat is from Mission Beach. The QuickCat departs from Clump Point Jetty at Mission Beach to Dunk Island Jetty. Transfer time is approximately 25 minutes. Mission Beach is approximately 2 hours by road south of Cairns.

You really must go on a boat trip to the reef and go snorkelling. It was awesome, totally different and one to tick off the list. You can get the boat from Dunk Island pier and costs roughly £40-£50 for family of four. Training is given and the crew go all out to make sure you have a fantastic day. brilliant!!!!

  • Dunk Island Golf Course

by mattahl Written Sep 28, 2010

I stayed on Dunk Island resort and decided to give their 9 hole golf course a go. I am far from being a pro and I was amazed by the stunning views and I have to say I was impressed by design of the course, some holes were real challenges. I paid $20 which included club hire, green fees, 3 golf balls and also a bottle of water. If you stay on Dunk Island resort I can highly recommend the golf course.

    Rainforest walks.

by Openseas Written Dec 18, 2007

The best activity on Dunk Island is taking a walk along one of the tracks which are available on the island. The best one being walking to the top of Mt Kootaloo to see the beautiful views surrounding Dunk Island. Take plenty of water, sunscreen and good walking shoes with you...and of course your camera. There are also lots of easier walks around the island. At the ferry wharf you will see a big map of the walks that can be done on Dunk Island. A member of Voyages staff will go through the different options available to you when you debark from the ferry or when you book into the resort.
