If you decide to start your tour to Fraser Island from Rainbow Beach (and decide to drive to Rainbow Beach from the south - ie Brisbane or Noosa) -
Please be aware that Google Maps, and any GPS does not provide the most ideal route to Rainbow Beach. Such map services suggest cutting through the Cooloola State Park using a GRAVEL ROAD.
I do not recommend this road if you are travelling using a non 4WD rental vehicle. This stretch is approximately 40km all together. We drove this stretch in the night, (pitch dark - obviously no street lights), you would be the only vehicle on the road. We were scared of getting a flat tire in the middle of no where.
Unique Suggestions: Recommend that you drive to Rainbow Beach by driving the Bruce Highway (A1) to Gympie, then take the turn off to Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach. It's only slightly longer, and most importantly safer.
Fraser Island was very lovely and a must do in Queensland
