The south coast of Queensland is a great place to go surfing. It’s close enough to the tropics to have warm water and, for most of the year, the weather is far from cold. Sure, the waves may not be as large as some areas down on Australia’s south coast, but those areas are only for owners of wetsuits! Here a pair of boardshorts will suffice. Maybe you’re unsure how to go about surfing? Classes are available, so that’s no excuse. Of course, there is surfing and there is surfing. Often it is now equated with riding on a surfboard and while I wouldn’t argue with that, unless you hire one it’s unlikely you’ll have one with you if you flew in. The other alternative is body surfing – somewhat overlooked these days, but very enjoyable and requiring nothing more than you. The system is to wait for a suitable wave, swim like mad as it reaches you, then tuck your chin down while slightly hunching your shoulders and putting your arms to your sides. All being well you’re now rocketing toward the beach … And, if not? Well, the results shouldn’t cause any damage unless you picked a ‘dumper’ to ride! So to the photos. Start with some lessons, as in the main photo, go out and get some practice as in photo 2 and, who knows, you may find yourself in a surfing competition like the surfer in photo 3! Theme: Surfing

Beach Fishing by grantravel The Gold Coast offers some great estuary, surf and reef fishing. From the Tweed Bar north to Sand Pumping Jetty and Gold Coast Seaway fishing can be world class with accessibility for all anglers. If unfamiliar with the fishing spot its best to check with the closest bait shop to where you wish to wet a line. The bait shop staff are a library of local knowledge, just ask them. Happy fishing! Gold Coast surfing by grantravel Surfing is a major sport on the Gold Coast, attracting some of the world's best competitors. Duranbah, Burleigh Point, Kirra and South Stradbroke are just four of the many great surfing spots, providing pumping surf and great barrels. The Gold Coast also plays host to international championships such as the Quicksilver Pro, Billabong Pro and the Roxy Pro. Leave a Comment

Duranbah Beach by goldcoaster Let's face it, the only real sport travel to the GC is for surfing. Sure there are rugby teams, both league and union, some great jet boat racing and of course the Indy car races but surfing is the main stay of the Coast. The best breaks vary from day to day but the most reliable is Duranbah at the southern end of the coast. The are others but it is the best on most days but the one we all wait for is when Kirra is pumping. It is the longest break in the world and I have ridden it for a kilometre. Sure it is a long walk back but it is worth it.
Most surfers bring their own boards but there are tons of board retailers on the coast from small single operator shapers up to Billabong. Leave a Comment Theme: SurfingAddress: 42 kms of great surf

Aside from surfing, if there is one thing the Gold Coast has a ton of, it's golf courses. These range from the Merrimac hackers, which is literally a cow paddock, to the very exclusive private courses of Arundel Hills and the Grand. For the most part you can get a round plus cart for about $50-75 at a decent course like Emerald Lakes, where they hold the Queensland PGA. For a slightly better course, say Royal Pines or Lakelands, the only Jack Nicklaus designed course in Australia, it will set you back about $100.
Most courses will insist that each player has their own set of clubs. If you don't want to bring them with you, most pro shops have them to hire at varying rates depending on the clubs. Many of the better courses offer a free hotel pick up and drop off service as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Golfing
