Great relaxing family holiday in the tropics
Can work out to a rather expensive holiday
If you don't mind the big-resort holiday expereince (and all that it entails) then go for it!!
Whitehaven beach claims to have the whitest sand in Australia. It is 7km long and runs along the edge of Whitesunday Island about a 30min boat trip from Hamilton Island. A half day criuse to Whitehaven costs $94 per adult, $45 per child. Morning tea is provided when you get back on the boat after visiting whitehaven. It was scones with jam and...more
The Marina is the base where many of the "other half" keep their expensive boats. There are several shops a grocery store, chemist, gift shops, post office, bakery, cafes and resturaunts. It is nice to grab a snack form the bakery and sit on the grass and watch the boats come and go.more
There are free shuttle buses that run around the island regularly. The green goes form catseye beach to the marina, Purple and orange do a loop of the island in opposite directions. The driver will give a commentary and answer any questions as you go. A full loop takes about 40minutes.more
At low tide the shore line will be several 100 metres from the edge of the beach. It is very interesting to take a walk out and see all the patterns the water makes in the sand and look for small critteres in the shallow water. This is facinating for small kids or really peaceful to go by yourself first thing in the morning.more

We arrived a bit early for our reservation so our table wasn't quite ready. No problems - we had cocktails by the pool in a really elegant outdoor setting. The waiters are fantastic - friendly approachable, and they have a spring in their step to keep pace - the restaurant was packed! They still take the time to fully explain the menu, the...more
We were dumbfounded! A pub that serves four kinds of Parmigiana but NOT ONE STEAK - unless you want a steak sandwich. No! We don't want a SNACK. We want a decent feed, a substantial meal. A meal that is typical of a typical Aussie Pub. Not a fish and chip shop. What IDIOT came up with that idea? Nothing - we walked outmore
At the bars in the main part of the resort, happy hour is staggered (and stagger is probably the right word too!). So starting from the Boungainvillea Bar which is by the pool in this pic you can kick off at 5pm or something, then it moves on to all the other bars aorund the resort so you may have the compass bar at the Reef View in the following...more

When taking a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef (which was absolutely sensational) make sure you take sea sick tablets. We went with the Reefworld people and they were fantastic, they sold tablets on the boat (unfortunately they don't work for everyone). We went a few days after the Tsunami and obviously the waters were rather choppy, many people...more
There are 3 different colour coded Island Shuttle busses running most of the day and night, and all of them are FREE!!!! How good is that!! The most commonly used one is the Green Shuttle and it does a loop all day long in 15 minute intervals from the Whitsunday Apartments on Resort Drive as far as the Marina Tavern at the Marina. This is the...more
I went to Australia the Gift with my Mother when she was getting tired. She didn't want to go inside so I said we would not stay long. I spoke to her in Korean because she is too old to learn English. Then I heard the store manager welcoming my Mother in Korean! He is Australian but he speaks our language fluently. Mother was very happy because...more
This is definitely not your average gift shop! The shop is immaculately clean and tidy for starters. They have a great range of well presented goods that are refreshingly different. You would expect to pay top dollar but they are actually the most reasonably priced gift and souvenir shop on the island. What really sets this store apart is the...more
This shop unlike some on the island is laid out beautifully, and makes it easy to look around for what you want. The prices are reasonable, and there is no feeling of being ripped off. Kevin and Michelle who run the place are pleasant, helpful and serve you as though they want your custom. Obviously, Island souvenirs, but the opal jewellery was...more
Those of you who are with NAB will be happy to know that there is a NAB ATM machine at the Resort Centre.
We all know that it costs to take out money these days, so if you are with NAB.... then you are the lucky one here ;o)

During the summer months in the Whitsundays when the ocean is warm you can experience an increase of these jellyfish in the ocean. They are small and transparent and if you are bitten you are likely to experience stinging, severe pain, muscle constriction and possible breathing difficulties. For this reason, it is often recommended that you limit...more
The Yellow Sub,..a great tourist trap!! Tacky?... Maybe a little... but we enjoyed ourselves :o)
But what a great thing to write home about.... viewing coral from the Yellow Submarine on the Great Barrier Reef!!
One Tree Hill is one of the highest points on the island which is easily reached by road, you can drive your cart there in 5 minutes or catch the free island bus. For those who are fit and like to hike you can walk there in 30 minutes. The bar opens at 4:30pm for "Sunset Cocktails" and the afternoon we went about 50 people turned up. It was a great...more
The Whitsunday Islands are a paradise to be explored, islands and coral reefs abound, the waters have a tremendous variety of fish and their colour will amaze you. You are going to look at the picture and say "not another walk up some mountain for gret views Lachy?!". Well, this one is a much easier way to score some views. Now don't laugh at me for this one, but head to the Reef View towers - the big tall ones and jump in the lift....press the 12th floor and the turn 180 degrees. There you have it, a...more
