Java Jolt Coffee House: Quiet and intimate

  • Java Jolt Coffee House - Mackay
    Java Jolt Coffee House

The Java Jolt cafe is a quiet place to enjoy a good cup of coffee and a light snack or meal. It is situated on the ground floor of the Dunkheld Gardens building in Victoria Street.
This is a more upmarket cafe and the meals are well presented and enjoyable. You can choose from the menu or take your pick from the 'specials' board. They also have a licenced bar. It is intimate and cosy inside and they also have a pleasant outdoor eating area.

The quiche and salad is my favourite and their coffee is particularly good.

Their Sticky Date Pudding with butterscotch sauce is to die for!

Boomerang Hotel Motel: A Good Feed!

    Boomerang Hotel/Motel

The Boomerang is a must for those looking for a 'good feed'. This hotel has been around for years and is a very popular eating establishment so it's best to make a reservation. You order off the board and they also have 'specials of the day'. Place your order, take a number and wait for it to be called. The best part is you get to help yourself from the large servery. A bit like Sizzlers. Soups [2 choices] hot veges, salads and pasta dishes. Plus great desserts! You can also just order a 'soup and salad' where you just grab a plate and help yourself. Don't let the outside appearance of the Boomerang sway you. Inside it is nicely decorated and well laid out.

They are renowned for their char grilled steaks. They also have seafood, chicken and mixed grills etc. The pumpkin soup is to die for!!

Cactus Jack's: Cheap cocktails - 'Happy Hour'
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cactus Jack's is one of those popular, trendy restaurants suitable for all age groups. The menu is typical Tex Mex and the food is quite good. The interior decor is very interesting and the seating well laid out. Don't miss the 'Happy Hour' from 5pm till 7pm [ yes I know it's 2 hours ] - cheap cocktails for $5.50.
Try the 'Mudslide' or the 'Dirty Cowboy'.

This restaurant has now shifted to a new complex ( beneath the new Mackay Grand Mercure )so I will be updating this tip soon...

Southwest Chicken Crispers - Fried chicken breast served in a tortilla shell with chips, salad and a honey mustard dipping sauce for $15.
Just Grazing - An assortment of spare ribs, chicken and beef enchiladas and buffalo wings with rice and salad for $17

    Sorbello's: Trendy and popular
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The popular restaurant Sorbello's is a lively, happening place. Great food, nice atmosphere and handy to the city nightlife. Service is a bit slow but the food is worth the wait.

One problem with this establishment is that they do not accept individual payments. Meaning, whether you are dining as a pair or a group of ten they will only take one payment.

Makes it difficult as each person must have the correct cash to either put in the kitty or give to the person who accepts to foot the bill.

I had the garlic prawns [ $19.95 ] and enjoyed every mouthful!
    They also make great pizzas!

    Coronas [ beer ] are $5.50
    Cocktails are $6.00

Eimeo Hotel: The pub with million dollar views.

  • View from the balcony. - Mackay
    View from the balcony.
    by lou31
    Send Photo to a Friend
Anyone visiting Mackay has to experience the Eimeo Hotel. It is not a high class establishment but an ordinary pub perched on a cliff with the most amazing ocean views. Most probably one of the best seaside views in Australia.
It has been privately owned by a local family for many years and has kept it's traditional charm.
Being situated as it is, it could easily be turned into a luxury 5 star hotel / resort, and probably will one day.
The pub was recently put up for tender and the owners turned down an offer of 13.5 million dollars for it!
The pub itself does great moderately priced lunches and you can either sit inside or out on the terraced balconies to take in that world class view.

This restaurant is now under new management and there have been some changes. I will be updating this tip soon...

Sunday lunch menus are pretty basic with dishes like...
    BBQ Rump Steak...$15
    Chicken Kiev...$15
    Seafood Platter...$19
    Crumbed Prawn Cutlets...$16

    The 'Specials Menu' includes...
    Tempura Fish...$8
    Crumbed Steak...$10
    T Bone Steak...?

The views are so spectacular that the food doesn't have to be top class to make it a popular place. The atmosphere is fantastic and I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Locals and visitors alike can enjoy this place without busting the budget.

    This is my favourite restaurant!

For me it ticks all the boxes. From the food to the service and the decor you can't go past it.

Inside is nice and roomy with pleasant furnishings and the staff are always friendly and efficient.

I always go for the chicken Gang Panang...a red curry dish made with coconut milk.

I can't really comment about the rest of the menu but friends rave about the seafood sizzling platter.

Actually it all looks pretty good!

Mackay Grand Mercure: Biggest meals in town.

    The new Mackay Grand Mercure

The A.M. Bar and Bistro at the 'Mercure' has the biggest meals I have ever seen ( or eaten!).

Meals are ordered over the counter and when they arrive ( on platters!) you can help yourself to vegetables and salad from the servery.

It cannot be described as quiet and intimate dining. Next door is a pokie room and over from that again is a lively bar full of party goers. However it is still a great place to dine out with friends and the food is good.

This place is also open for breakfast and lunch.

I had the garlic prawns ( entree size) for $15.50

Other meals included Salt and Pepper Calamari, Grilled Barramundi, Wagyu Beef and Tuscan Chicken to name a few.

B'NW Asian Cuisine: Best Asian food in town.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This restaurant is only small but the food is good and the service fast. It is situated in a busy arcade amongst shops and cafes. Their $12 lunches are popular with about 10 dishes to choose from.

Friends and I went there for dinner for my birthday [17 of us all together] and there was not one complaint about the food.

I particularly like the Singapore Noodles and the Nasi Goreng.

The Beef in Black Bean Sauce is popular as is the Shredded Beef in Special Sauce.

The Toffee Apple and Icecream is to die for...apple pieces fried in batter and coated in a thin layer of hard toffee. The serving is large and enough for two people.

    South's Football Club
    by lou31
    Send Photo to a Friend
Take your pick of the local Football Clubs when you want a cheap meal. These establishments offer good meals at reasonable prices. There are always specials or you can order off the board. All football clubs have pokie machines and a bar plus TV's and TAB for racing enthusiasts.
Entry is a bit tricky though. You have to be accompanied by a member or be a subsiduary member of another club. Just ask at the foyer and they will advise you on how to get in. Worth the time as the meals are good and substancial though not restaurant quality.

Typical meals would be...Chicken Kiev and other chicken dishes,Steaks, Fish, Pasta, Prawns etc. There is always a buffet where you can help yourself to salads and vegetables.

Happy David's Kitchen: Good food / Good Price
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This chinese restaurant is known for its good food.

It is both a takeaway and dine in establishment. The restaurant's decor is very plain and ordinary but the food is tasty and relatively cheap.

Their banquet dinners are excellent. They start in price from $17 with a minimum of four people.

The Sweet and Sour Pork and Honeyed King Prawns were very good.
