The Boomerang is a must for those looking for a 'good feed'. This hotel has been around for years and is a very popular eating establishment so it's best to make a reservation. You order off the board and they also have 'specials of the day'. Place your order, take a number and wait for it to be called. The best part is you get to help yourself from the large servery. A bit like Sizzlers. Soups [2 choices] hot veges, salads and pasta dishes. Plus great desserts! You can also just order a 'soup and salad' where you just grab a plate and help yourself. Don't let the outside appearance of the Boomerang sway you. Inside it is nicely decorated and well laid out.
Favorite Dish: They are renowned for their char grilled steaks. They also have seafood, chicken and mixed grills etc. The pumpkin soup is to die for!!
Cactus Jack's is one of those popular, trendy restaurants suitable for all age groups. The menu is typical Tex Mex and the food is quite good. The interior decor is very interesting and the seating well laid out. Don't miss the 'Happy Hour' from 5pm till 7pm [ yes I know it's 2 hours ] - cheap cocktails for $5.50.
Try the 'Mudslide' or the 'Dirty Cowboy'.
This restaurant has now shifted to a new complex ( beneath the new Mackay Grand Mercure )so I will be updating this tip soon...
Favorite Dish: Southwest Chicken Crispers - Fried chicken breast served in a tortilla shell with chips, salad and a honey mustard dipping sauce for $15.
Just Grazing - An assortment of spare ribs, chicken and beef enchiladas and buffalo wings with rice and salad for $17
The popular restaurant Sorbello's is a lively, happening place. Great food, nice atmosphere and handy to the city nightlife. Service is a bit slow but the food is worth the wait.
One problem with this establishment is that they do not accept individual payments. Meaning, whether you are dining as a pair or a group of ten they will only take one payment.
Makes it difficult as each person must have the correct cash to either put in the kitty or give to the person who accepts to foot the bill.
Favorite Dish: I had the garlic prawns [ $19.95 ] and enjoyed every mouthful!
They also make great pizzas!
Coronas [ beer ] are $5.50
Cocktails are $6.00
Anyone visiting Mackay has to experience the Eimeo Hotel. It is not a high class establishment but an ordinary pub perched on a cliff with the most amazing ocean views. Most probably one of the best seaside views in Australia.
It has been privately owned by a local family for many years and has kept it's traditional charm.
Being situated as it is, it could easily be turned into a luxury 5 star hotel / resort, and probably will one day.
The pub was recently put up for tender and the owners turned down an offer of 13.5 million dollars for it!
The pub itself does great moderately priced lunches and you can either sit inside or out on the terraced balconies to take in that world class view.
This restaurant is now under new management and there have been some changes. I will be updating this tip soon...
Favorite Dish: Sunday lunch menus are pretty basic with dishes like...
BBQ Rump Steak...$15
Crumbed Prawn Cutlets...$16
The 'Specials Menu' includes...
T Bone Steak...?
The views are so spectacular that the food doesn't have to be top class to make it a popular place. The atmosphere is fantastic and I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Locals and visitors alike can enjoy this place without busting the budget.
This is my favourite restaurant!
For me it ticks all the boxes. From the food to the service and the decor you can't go past it.
Inside is nice and roomy with pleasant furnishings and the staff are always friendly and efficient.
Favorite Dish: I always go for the chicken Gang Panang...a red curry dish made with coconut milk.
The Pad Thai goes down well too!
I can't really comment about the rest of the menu but friends rave about the seafood sizzling platter.
Actually it all looks pretty good!
This restaurant is small and it is situated in a busy arcade amongst shops and cafes. Their $12 lunches are popular with about 10 dishes to choose from.
I had a terrible experience with the owner here recently. He was very rude and openly argued with me in front of everyone. I had been one of the first to order a main meal and our table of 16 were all happily munching away with me still waiting. When I complained he became quite aggessive and arguementive.
I was shaken and feeling ill by the time my meal arrived!
Favorite Dish: Singapore Noodles.
The A.M. Bar and Bistro at the 'Mercure' has the biggest meals I have ever seen ( or eaten!).
They have recently made changes to this restaurant with table service only and the buffet option is no more. The prices have risen and the menu is limited. Apparently the food is still good and the meals are large.
It cannot be described as quiet and intimate dining. More of a happening place with a Pokies room next door and over from that again a lively up market bar. However it is still a great place to dine out with friends and the food is good.
This place is also open for breakfast and lunch.
Favorite Dish: I had the garlic prawns ( entree size) for $15.50
Other meals included Salt and Pepper Calamari, Grilled Barramundi, Wagyu Beef and Chicken Parmisana to name a few.
Take your pick of the local Football Clubs when you want a cheap meal. These establishments offer good meals at reasonable prices. There are always specials or you can order off the board. All football clubs have pokie machines and a bar plus TV's and TAB for racing enthusiasts.
Entry is a bit tricky though. You have to be accompanied by a member or be a subsiduary member of another club. Just ask at the foyer and they will advise you on how to get in. Worth the time as the meals are good and substancial though not restaurant quality.
Favorite Dish: Typical meals would be...Chicken Kiev and other chicken dishes,Steaks, Fish, Pasta, Prawns etc. There is always a buffet where you can help yourself to salads and vegetables.
This chinese restaurant is known for its good food.
It is both a takeaway and dine in establishment. The restaurant's decor is very plain and ordinary but the food is tasty and relatively cheap.
Favorite Dish: Their banquet dinners are excellent. They start in price from $17 with a minimum of four people.
The Sweet and Sour Pork and Honeyed King Prawns were very good.
This place is a busy and popular steakhouse down on the Marina. They cater for both small and large groups and the service is quick and efficient.
It is one of those places where they display the raw steaks and they always look fresh and tempting.
It is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.
Favorite Dish: I had a rib fillet which melted in my mouth...cooked just how I like it.
Each steak comes with a large baked potato done in alfoil and sour cream plus a salad. You can order side dishes of chips/vegies etc if you like.
Other choices were pork chops and chicken but mainly the menu was made up of different steaks including the very expensive Waghu Beef and Rump, T Bones and Eye Fillet etc.
This is a very popular restaurant and is situated down on the Marina. The interior is tastefully decorated and offers great views out onto the harbour.
Their food is excellent. The prices are higher than average but the dining experience is to be reccomended.
Favorite Dish: I had the Pad Thai Noodles which were tasty and filling.
HBC is a franchise which specialises in steaks...mount watering tender steaks, cooked to perfection!
The first Hogs Breath opened nearby in Airlie Beach in 1989. Now there are something like 68 restaurants throughout Australia.
The steaks really are good. The service can be a bit slow and the restaurants are ususally packed out but the meal is always worth the wait.
They now have a new and improved menu which includes the option of a smaller steak size for those only wanting a lighter version.
Vegetarians are catered for with some fish dishes available.
Favorite Dish: I had the rib fillet with mushrooms and it was delicious!
But a note of warning...dessert!...
Stay away from the Sticky Date Pudding which comes covered in butterscotch sauce, and served with cream AND icecream!...It is huge and sure to knock you off your feet!...yum!
Fratini's is a resturant I went to in my stay in Mackay i found the place's atmosphere wonderful. the outside seating over looks the bay and the patrons get the wonderful sea breases
Favorite Dish: My faveroite dish was the parmasana beef . The beef was tender and juicy na dthe cheese had the most wonderful bite to it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a hearty yet delicate meal.
This restaurant has been recently refurbished and is very popular with the locals. The owner has not long returned from a holiday in Italy and is newly inspired and rearing to go with his new menu.
The food is good but don't turn up expecting a quiet meal experience. It is extremely noisy inside...it's like being in a tin shed. They need to either hang some curtains or wall hangings or lay down some large rugs to soak up the noise.
Another option for customers is to eat outdoors which can be a very pleasant experience depending on the weather...it can get windy by the sea!
Favorite Dish: I have only eaten here once and chose the Seafood Risotto which was nice but could have had more seafood in it.
The pizzas however looked scrumptious and is what I will be ordering next time I go. I tasted one and it really was very good!
This well run restaurant is another popular eating establishment here in Mackay. It has been in business for years which is a good indicator of a rest it's success. The service and food are both very good and the menu is interesting and varied.
Favorite Dish: I recently had one of the banquets...cost about $36 each.
There was too much food for the 12 or so of us..we couldn't eat it all.
I can't remember all the dishes but there was a Chicken and Cashews, a Thai Chicken Curry and Massaman Beef included.
