Eight o' clock every Wednesday night the famous toad races are held at Arkie's Resort in Arcadia. We went along with the kids and it was so much fun (for us and them). The larger than life Master of Ceremonies introduces each of the large ugly cane toads by name (Little Johnny Howard, Virgin and Paddy to name but a few) then ties a coloured ribbon around its neck.
Each toad is then put up for auction with the 'owner' of the winning toad receiving a large share of the kitty (the balance goes to the surf life saving club). The bidding is fast and furious and when we were there bets as high as $50 were reached. After receiving a big kiss from the MC each toad is placed in a plastic container in the middle of a large circle. Then after a quick shake the toads are off with lots of enthusiastic cheers from the punters and the first toad to cross the line wins.
Unfortunately my camera batteries died the night we went so you will have to wait for our next trip to the island to see some photos.
