While visiting Horseshoe Bay on the island we took a short beach walk to find a trailer set up on the beach, looked like it had been there a long time. The next day we went back to find a group of people standing around this area watching as birds dove down to the ground and landed on and around a mysterious man, who we later found out was the Bird Man!
He trained the birds and they were pretty much his pets. He talked to a lot of people and if you were lucky you got invited to dinner. He apparently is friendly with austrialian tv personalities that come and visit him. And some politians I think, couldn't hear all that well through his thick accent. Check him out...though this could be considered a tourist trap.

If you can get your hands on a 4wd vehicle, i strongly recoment going for a drive around the other roads on the island....
just watch you dont bump your head, hehehe

On my last visit to Townsville, we caught the ferry over to Magnetic Island. We did a lot of 4 wheel driving (i got a huge bump on my head!) a lot of swimming, and a tiny bit of snorkling....
