You can cycle around the island, but you'll have to be in some sort of shape. Some of the hills are quite steep. You can rent a bike in Picnic Bay, or if you don't feel up to it, a scooter. Busses also drive on the island, but the tickets are expensive and they don't go very often.
From Sydney hop on a cheap Virgin Blue flight up to Townsville. From there catch a ferry from the habour to the islands. Once you get there you just have to decide which bay you want to go to. There are many buses leaving from the ferry drop off point that will take you where you need to go for very little.

its soooooooo much fin to be able to go where you want when you want, without having to worry abou bus time tables or weather the road is safe enough for a normal car...
if you take a four wheel drive around magnettic island, you can explore places other people wont be able to get to
you can hire some too for while your over there
if you have a car... or even better a four wheel drive
you can take it across to maggie island for about $120 australian
i found sitting on top helps with the sea sickness... rather than being in your car
takes about an hour
you can get the sunferries boat across to the island... i have included the website just incase
it usually takes about an hour to get across
(take a lot of minties for sea sickness)
and they run about 15 times a day
I have this under General Tips as well: the bus only goes in one direction around the island. If you get off at the first stop at the beginning of the day and get on the bus at the end of the day and think you're in for a short ride back to the dock, you're wrong. You'll have to ride the whole route around the island to get back to the dock.
You'll have to take a ferry to Magnetic Island. You can get a return ticket for just under $17 per person (children are less). There is also a bus to get you around the island and I think you can buy a pass or ticket to cover both.
There are two locations from which you can catch the ferry: Flinders Street East Terminal and Breakwater Terminal.
It takes about 25 minutes to and from get to Maggie. Take this time to see Townsville from afar, nap, play rock/paper/scissors or taking deep breaths for fear of being sea sick. Yes, even the best of us get that ill feeling on even a simple ferry ride.
