Maryborough Things to Do

  • WALKING TOUR OF MARYBOROUGH

At the Tourist Information Centre I picked up several different walking tour brochures for around Maryborough.I decided to do the Discovery tour first which began at the City Hall where the Tourist Information centre is located. At the front of City Hall, is quite a small but important canon. It is a Time Canon, and isn't the original one that was...

  • MARYBOROUGH STATE HIGH SCHOOL

The HIgh School's were one of the first buildings we saw in Maryborough, although at the time I didn't know what these attractive old building's were. Buildings were on both sides of the road. In 1881, Maryborough Boys Grammar School was built on one side of Kent street, then in 1883, Maryborough Girls Grammar School was built on the opposite side....

  • HISTORIC PUBS & TRAIL

Another walking trail in Maryborough, one the men would like to do!The book, with details on lots of the Hotel's, can be bought from the Tourist Information centre for $2.I have already described quite a few of the Hotel's, believe me, there are heaps more in Maryborough! Most have tales to tell, about Opium dens - it was legal back then,...

  • BROLGA THEATRE

The large Brolga Theatre and Convention centre was built in the year 2000.It has lots of excellent shows, so I suggest checking out the website to see if something interests you when on holiday in Maryborough. While we were in Maryborough, English pop group "Herman's Hermit's" were performing, A Festival of Russian Ballet and the Ten Tenor's to name...

  • POINT LOOKOUT

Also on the Tourist drive is a stop at Point Lookout. As it was located on a cliff overlooking the Mary River, I thought it would have a wonderful view - this wasn't to be. I think Tree's and Shrub's have grown and blocked most of the view, as back in 1847, this Point was used as a lookout to see what Ship's were coming up river and heading to the...

  • THE OLD FLOUR MILL

A rather surprising find on the Tourist Drive, was an old Flour Mill built in 1890. In 1919, the Dominion Flour Milling Company were the owner's of the Mill. On the front of the building was an old sign "The Old Millhouse Bowerbird Nest." To me, it looked like another building in Maryborough caught in a time warp!Open 9-5pm Monday to Friday.

  • ELIZABETH PARK ROSE GARDEN

Once upon a time, between the years 1860-1873, this park was the second Maryborough cemetery. Official's decided it was a health risk to have the cemetery located here amongst the expanding city, so the cemetery was moved to the now permanent Maryborough Cemetery. Now, it is quite a big Rose Park, thanks to a lovely donation of 4,500 Roses from a...

  • ANZAC PARK & ULULAH LAGOON

Anzac Park and Ululah Lagoon are both together in this large Park. We were here on a week-day when the Park was quite quiet, I doubt if this would be the case on the weekends. There is a wonderful playground for the children, a skate bowl, children's fort and flying fox.The playground was undercover so children wouldn't get sunburnt. It was here...

  • PIONEER GRAVES

On our way to see the site of "Old Maryborough Town" we saw some old graves. As I particularly like old grave yards, the car was stopped and I went for a look. These were Pioneer graves.Originally, there wasn't a cemetery in Maryborough, so as the pioneer's died in Old Maryborough town, they were buried in the bush. Since then, they have been moved...

  • OLDE WORLD CHARM HOUSES!

What I am talking about, is the dozen's of heritage homes in Maryborough. This and Ipswich are two of the best cities to see historical homes that have been restored and repainted to look a picture. We drove around in our car, and found some streets were better than others.Ann & Pallas streets near our Caravan Park had some lovely homes, these can...

  • OLD MARYBOROUGH

The site of the original Maryborough is on the outskirts of town, too far for walking so we drove our car there. The last part of the road is dirt, and there is a small area for parking. The original Maryborough site, occupied until 1855, didn't have much for us to see! There are meant to be fifteen points of interest on the walk, including the...

  • MARY RIVER PARKLAND'S

I couldn't believe that in January this year [2013] the Mary River would have flooded the beautiful Mary River Parklands. It was lunch time, and as usual we had to find somewhere to eat. We didn't really feel like Take-away, so we drove around some streets checking out Hotel Menu's.
The old Aussie Hotel [1875] had a menu board with a variety of meals for $5, now you can't beat that price!
Finding a carpark was hard, the Hotel did have its own parking, but this was full. Into the Dining room we went, this was fairly full too, I managed to grab the last table, while my husband went and ordered.
For a $5 meal, we could choose between Fish & Chips, Roast & Chips, Steak & chips & Chicken & Chips.
There was a long queue ordering, once the order was in, the wait wasn't too bad. I had fish & chips, which was frozen fish in crumb cooked, chips & salad. My husband had Steak, chips & salad. The Meal wasn't anything fancy, we didn't expect it for THAT price, but for $5 it was good and we couldn't complain. We've had worse for treble the price!

Maryborough offers this fully escorted Spine tingling dinner tour through the old heritage part of the city and the port situated on the Mary River.
The tour takes you into heritage buildings after dark and spooky experiences with details of hangings, murder and mayhem in the brothel. It is such a lot of fun and the cast are dressed in period costumes and take on characters from the 1890's.They tell you some ghastly true stories of what happened during those days.

  • CAR PARKS IN MARYBOROUGH

The best way to see Maryborough is to walk.As we came by car, we need to find parking, and here in Maryborough, it wasn't a problem. Parking in these were FREE, just make sure to check the sign to see what the hours are and how long your allowed to park, as some had a 2 hour limit,...

  • BICYCLE FRIENDLY MARYBOROUGH

Maryborough is an Australian city that is Bicycle friendly. It was great to find Bicycle tracks around the city, making it much safer for cyclists. Another point - it's easy riding as Maryborough is all flat land. So next time you come here, think about getting around by Bicycle, a good way to explore the streets and see the old Queenslander homes.

Toogoom is a tucked away relaxing bay approx 18klm north west of Hervey Bay.
I delighted in this picture perfect area.
The beach is so unspoilt and it is a popular fishing spot.
There is a great little licenced cafe/restaurant called Goody's on the beach, right on the bay that has uninterrupted water views.
A great place to relax, fish or dine.
