About 10km south of Mount Tamborine, the Canungra Valley starts. This is a beautiful area that is very green and does not look like the stereotypical Australia at all - the green is so strong and bright that it rather looks like a picture book Europe. Ok, I have to add that I was there shortly after a lot of rainfall - it probably is not THAT green when it has not rained for a long time.
The name "Canungra" is derived from a word in the local Aboriginal language, Caningera, a small owl species. Therefore, Canungra Valley is also called "the valley of owls".
The area has very good and rich soil, as it is volcanic earth. Therefore, it is good farming land, but also suitable for wine growing which is a new industry here since the 1990. It also relies heavily on tourism, as there are many popular destinations, such as O'Reillys Rainforest Retreat and O'Reilly's Winery. If you drive from Mount Tamborine to O'Reilly's, or vice versa, you will drive through this green valley and I hope that you will like it as much as I did - to me, it looked like a place out of a story :-)

Gallery Walk is a street on Tamborine Mountain where you find many small shops: Small art galleries, souvenir shops, café, small special culunary shops (for example the famous fudge shop) etc...
I must say that I did not like it so much because it was simply a stop to spend some money. I was here on a guided tour and had much more liked to spend more time in the rainforest, and not to be driven to a place where we were clearly expected to buy something. What I liked was that there were many nice food specialities, like macademia nuts or special kinds of sweets, but most they were too expensive for my budget (although I think that those prices are justified for local, handmade produce).
Moreover, I did not really like the shops - and I did not find any really good galleries. But I must also say that maybe this was just because we did not have so much time.
All in all, I found Gallery Walk a bit boring, and was happy when we went to our next destination.

Kamarun Lookout is a beautiful lookout on the way from Mount Tamborine to O'Reilly's. We only had a short stop here, but I really enjoyed it. It gives you an idea of how green this area really is! On a fine day you have a really fantastic view.
The lookout is located about 10km northwest of O'Reilly's, and 35km south of Mount Tamborine, at a small turnoff from the Lamington Park Road.

We were welcomed by mine hosts John and Michelle (2010) then it was a tour of inspection followed by a glass of beer in the cosy lounge; then came every VTers main interest...the food.
In 2011 new mine hosts.
Lunch was really very tasty. You will enjoy. I am not a salad person but the crab and avocado was fresh and lovely. Gluten free and vegetarian choices are available. Did not like the Sunday Roast in 2011.
And you can meet Leo the St Bernards Dog Mascot at the Hotel. He was born at Snomark Kennels on the 1st August 2006 and took up residence at the Hotel in early November 2006.
If you plan to propose to your darling ...well they host weddings as well.
Have a look at the website there is heaps more...Friday night entertainment, a bottle shop, a few poker machines, the history of the hotel, and an idea of future plans for the hotel.
Accommodation available in the adjacent motel (see tip)

The Botanic gardens are not old like a lot of Botanic Gardens, so are still being developed. Even so, they are quite nice already. There is a good display of Camellias, Bromeliads, Magnolias, Rainforest etc. A nice little lake, with bridge and plenty of lawn for picnics, its good for a stroll and to return in later years as it develops. A lot of It has all been done by volunteers from the Tamboringe Mountain Garden Club, a credit to them for the excellent job they have done.

I didn't do any fossicking, but just went to the Mine shop where I had a look at the cut and polished Thundereggs. This was FREE. Souvenirs are for sale here to, and at the beginning of the walkway, is a Cafe.
The formation of thundereggs is still much of a mystery

A nice area for an oversea's visitor, is "The Gallery walk" on Mount Tamborine.
I took my New Zealand friend here for a look as she was keen on "Arts & Crafts."
The street itself is called "GALLERY WALK." I was lucky to find a carpark actually in the street as quite often when the Tourist Buses are there, and on the weekends, car parks are hard to find.
We just walked the whole length of the street, popping in and out of shops the whole way. There were many galleries and craft shops displaying all forms of artistic work such as paintings, glass, sculpture's, pottery, antiques, ceramics, porcelain, glass, jewellery, nic - nacs and much more.
Judy tried some of the wine, as wine tasting was free, and at another shop, we tried the home-made fudge.
Mmmm, the smell of freshly brewed Coffee available at the many Cafes, made a Coffee stop a must!
Toilets [free] are located in the street.
We had a great time, even though we hardly bought a thing, we just enjoyed browsing the many interesting shops in this street.

After lunch, I did the walk the left from the Knoll picnic ground to Cameron Falls.
The walk was through Rainforest, past mosses, ferns, and beside a freshwater creek that had many rapids, and big boulders covered in moss, it was so pretty!
There were lots of Trees, including the tall Gum Trees that I had previously seen on Tamborine Mountain.
I heard and saw some Birds, and more Scrub Turkeys on my walk. The Falls were nice, and I viewed them from a viewing platform. More nice views over the valley.
This was a lovely walk, about 3kms for a round trip, not too hard. Could be wet and slippery after rain.

Formerly the Sussex Arms in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK.
There's a slim chance I may have drank at this pub in my youth and now it's here in sunny Queensland, you'll have to see the website for the whole story.
I flew half way around the world to find an old friend, took a few internal flights across Australia, rented a car and drove out of Brisbane, went to Oxenford and was taken across the county to see a whole pub that had made a similar journey, of course when we arrived...it was shut.
