Cinema Pomona

By popular demand, screenings are now held on Tuesday evenings -

Doors are open from 6.15pm. Tea and coffee are available, so come and relax with fellow film lovers before the film. Stay on for informal discussion and feedback after the film.

The Committee is called "ReelHeads" so that should enlighten you as to what it is all about.

"Pomona has retained much of its quaint historical built character which the community fights hard to protect. The most iconic historical building is the unique and famous Majestic Theatre, built in 1921, which is the only authentic continuously operating silent movie theatre in the world, with pictures accompanied live on the pipe organ."

COORAN'S LOOKOUT

Located about 7kms from Pomona, is another small town called Cooran, and a magnificent lookout.
I am not sure of the name of this scenic lookout. It was signposted from the Queen street.

The road climbed its way up a steep mountain to the lookout. The views were way down to the coast and Lake Cootharaba, and of all the surrounding volacanic plugs. Mount Cooroora, Mount Cooran, Mount Cooroy and some more. At the top, there is a plaque which tells you what you are viewing.

SCENIC DRIVE TO WOLVI MOUNTAIN

Wolvi Mountain looking to Noosa Heads

A nice drive that we have done a few times, is the round trip on the Gympie/Kin Kin road to Wolvi Mountain and onto Gympie, and then returning back to Pomona via the Bruce Highway.

Mt. Wolvi is about 42kms from Pomona. The signpost to it, is not that good, so check your odometer when around the 40km mark.
The drive is up a steep dirt Mountain road lined with Trees, that nearer the top, open to farmland and some homes. The views these people have are fabulous!

What was disappointing, is they now have a gate, which at the start of the road said it was closed at 6pm nightly.
At 10am, it still was not open, so we did not reach the summit like we had done on previous trips.
The views from here are still good, we could see the lakes and Noosa, and coming back down the Mountain, lovely views of general farmland and Gympie in the distance.

MOUNT COOROORA at POMONA

MOUNT COOROORA, 439metres high............ If people can run up and down it, then surely I could climb it!

Well, years ago I did reach the top of this Mountain, but on my second attempt many years later, I only managed to make it three quarters of the way to the top.

It is not an easy climb as it has many loose stones, rocks to walk over, and in some places, nothing to hang onto, it is very challenging, steep, and difficult.

It has been improved in one way since my last visit, as there are now metal ladders in some area's, but in other places, the track has worn away leaving colossal steps to try and climb........my muscles told me all about this the next couple of days!

Even if you do not make it to the top, but only to the 1st lookout, you will be rewarded with far reaching views of the surrounding countryside and the township of Pomona.

They say to allow two hours, depending on your fitness, it could be longer or shorter.

The car park is located on Mountain Road which is off School Road in the village of Pomona.

Pomona is about a 25 min drive from Noosa.
Distance from Brisbane.... 166 Kilometres.

MAJESTIC CINEMA @ POMONA

The Majestic Theatre today

Located in POMONA, is the MAJESTIC CINEMA.............
the oldest continuously running SILENT MOVIE CINEMA IN THE WORLD.

Built as the Majestic Hall in 1921, it was originally used for social and sporting events and silent movies. 'Talkies' were introduced briefly in 1931, but the cinema reverted back to silent movies and today shows a variety of films.

It was a big success in the "OLDEN DAYS" with people from coming from far & wide for the Majestic’s opening night screening in December 1928. There were so many, that the Theatre couldn't accomodate them all, so they spilled into the surrounding paddocks when all the seats and aisle spaces were filled.

Movie prices in 2010 are $15 to $12

Check the website for times and what is showing.

"KING OF THE MOUNTAIN RACE'

Track up Mt. Cooroora

In 1958, Bruce Samuals ran up the top of the 438metre Mt. Cooroora in less than an hour. Many people disagreed with him, that he did it in that time, so he did it again under supervision in the time of 40minutes. He collected quite a bit of money in bets.

On June 27th, 1959, the first official 'King of the Mountain" race was run.

If you wish to compete in it, and test your stamina, it is run of the 4th Sunday in July each year. The race begins in the town itself at 3pm, before heading up the goat track to the top of the mountain. Its a very steep, vertical climb, and coming back downhill would be quite frightening! I have walked this rugged, extremely steep track, and how they run up and down it without killing or injuring themselves, I don't know!

Would you believe, THE RACE RECORD WAS SET IN 1987......22min 50seconds.

As well, there is a Festival, beginning with a "Poets Breakfast," PLUS....Sideshows and Entertainment, like Thong & Gumboot throwing and other activities all day.

If you enlarge the photo, you will be able to see the trail leading to the top on the left hand side of the photo.
