JACK TAYLOR WEIR/ANDREW NIXON BRIDGE

Jack Taylor Weir

The weir is 5.8 metres high and is fitted with 13 vertical lift gates, a pump station, and a storage capacity of 10,000 megalitres.

A cairn commemorates the crossing of the river by Thomas Mitchell in 1846. We found it amongst some landscaped gardens adjacent to the weir. A plaque also denotes the spot where Mitchell camped, naming this natural crossing point St George Bridge, as it was discovered on St. Georges Day.

The Andrew Nixon Bridge, completed in 1953, runs across the top.

We had another look, as this time was after the massive floods they had, when some of St. George was flooded. It certainly was amazing at how high the water got, way above the top of the weir, and the Bushes and Trees, how they had been moved by the incredible force of water!

Not far away from the 1st Mural, is the History of Cotton Mural.

This one was sponsored by the St George Cotton Growers Association, and is another large Mural.

The Mural depicts the history of the local cotton industry. It shows the Cotton growing in the paddocks, and the Cotton Harvester reaping the Cotton. The Jack Taylor weir is also in the Mural, as water is important in the cotton industry.

WW 2 PILOT'S WAR MEMORIAL

Pilot's War Memorial

Located in the parkland beside the Balonne river, you will come across the St. George Pilot's Memorial.
These are in rememberance of Squadron leader John Jackson, and Warrant Officer Leonard Waters. Squadron Leader John Jackson flew at Moresby and was killed there in 1942. He is the only known Australian Pilot to have a foreign international airport named after him.

What is of interest here, is that "Leonard Waters" is remembered as
THE ONLY KNOWN ABORIGINAL FIGHTER PILOT TO SERVE IN WORLD WAR II
He was an 18yr old shearer, when he joined the RAAF

The UNIQUE EGG

Unique Emu eggs

The Unique Egg..........What a correct name, these Emu Eggs are definately unique!

The eggs are Emu eggs that have been hand carved, painted and illuminated.
Steve Margaritus [originally from Greece]and his daughter, Panorea, for over 40 years have been carving eggs. Not long after his arrival in Australia he took to the art of emu egg carving and illuminating them, this shows off the wonderful variety of colours.

The colours of the eggs range from a dark green outer layer, which becomes lighter as layers are removed. More than 150 eggs are now on display at the Unique Egg Gallery. Some of the scenes are depicting Australias great moments.
They are so well done that they have been displayed at World Expos.

Amazing!
They are on permanent display at a room in the store.

OPEN... 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on weekdays
9.00 a.m. to midday on Saturdays, CLOSED SUNDAYS.

Cotton display

The Visitor centre at St. George is really a very good one, so make sure you pay a visit.
Inside as usual, are helpful staff, and plenty of free maps and pamphlets with information on what to see and do.

There were two displays................One was of Cotton, and one was of Wool, these are big rural industries in this area.
St. George is the largest Cotton growing area in Queensland.

Toilets are located at the centre, and plenty of off street parking. The riverside walk is just across the road.
