Mission Beach is home to the Cassowary a huge flightless bird which is listed as a endangered species. We never saw one which was unfortunate, as we did look seriously around whilst walking the bush/ rainforest tracks. There are signs everywhere saying "please drive carefully" as most of the Cassowary's have been killed by cars. There are some other fabulous birds to look out for if visiting Mission Beach like the Australian Ibis, HuntingSea Eagle, Black-necked Stock, Brahming Kite and many many more. The most popular activity is to visit Dunk Island, which is a short ferry/ water taxi ride away from Mission Beach. One can either stay at Dunk Island Resort or have a day pass, which allows full use of the resort facilities and includes a lunch deal. AUD$20.00pp. For more details see my transport tips. We caught the taxi over and it was fun and extremely quick, on arrival we were greeted by a Voyages staff member who took us through what could be done as a day visitor. We opted to buy the $20.00AUD day pass which included a lunch deal at Voyages Resort and full use of their swimming pools. Lunch at Voyages was basically a set menu of pasta dishes and salads, we thought it to be good value and tasty. The resort has many facilities and attractions; we found the swimming pools to be excellent especially the main pool overlooking the beach. This resort would be fabulous for families as there is a good size kids club, tennis courts, golf course, and heaps of water activities to keep everyone happy. We had a stroll around the resort; basically it’s not your 5 star hotel but offers a relaxed tropical beach atmosphere set amongst gorgeous tropical gardens and beaches. There are plenty of things to see and do for the day visitor, the resort rests beside the Dunk Island National Park so there are many walking tracks to explore through the rainforests and secluded beaches. Sailing boats, paddle skies, horse riding and fishing equipment can all be hired from the water sports store. Overall - We had a fabulous day's outing and its well worth your effort to experience this lovely tropical island and Voyages Resort. Website: www.voyages.com.au
