South Stradbroke Island Things to Do

Couran Cove has a philospphy of kind-of educating people about why the resort works so well. They have a small interpretive centre near the general store with various diplays about the Island's Aboriginal, Maritime and commercial history and it is a good place to get a feel for the place before going for an explore. There is no charge to have a wander through the displays and they are very well-done.

Couran Cove has lots of wildlife in amongst the activity. If you are from overseas and haven't yet seen Australia's native animals here is a great place! There are wallabies hopping around the place, and they often congregate on Spa Island to eat the grass that grows there. Also expect to see lots of birdlife - you might be fortunate enough to see a whistling kite - the bird on the Couran Cove logo. And you are sure also to see a goanna - the big lizards that usually hang around in the forest where the nature cabins are.

If that's your thing, there is a small rock-climbing wall on the island, you have to do it as an organised activity and the wall isn't that challenging (if you regularly climb outdoors or in a climbing gym) but still good to hang about or for first-time climbers!

Think it cost about $5 or so...

Just a note of caution - the 'hard' wall gets full morning sun and the holds were so hot I had pink achy fingertips so if they have afternoon climbs these may be the better option!

Make sure you are out and about at sunset - we caught some stunning ones while we were there!
