Like I said previously, not much here, but do take the walk up the side road from the Cobb & CO. centre to see the Shire Hall.

It is looking resplendant since a recent restoration, including a paint job.
Built in 1930, it has art deco styled architecture and has been the venue for many balls, dances, weddings and parties. It really is an unusual timber building, probably the most interesting one in Town.
On the clock face rather than the numerals is the name Alex J Simpson measuring the hours, I don't know who he is.

Surat Cobb & CO

The main point of interest in Surat, is the Cobb & Co Store Museum, the Balonne River Gallery, a Fresh Water Aquarium and the Surat Visitor Information Centre all in the one complex, the Cobb & Co Changing Station.

I have not been inside, only looked in the windows, as every time we have been here, it has been closed. One day, I will strike it lucky!

From what I hear, there is a magnificent floor to ceiling mural.
I can tell you that for 40 years Cobb & Co coaches were delivering goods, passengers and mail along this route, and The Changing Ways permanent exhibition tells the local history of Cobb & Co. Also inside, is a replica 14-seater Cobb & Co coach.

It was 4 young Americans that founded Cobb & Co in 1853.
In Queensland they operated from 1866 to 1924, having 4 major routes throuogh the Balonne shire. The Balonne Shire, was the only one to have a full team of White Horses, what a sight it must have been! These horses worked the Surat to St. George line.

The Surat to St. George line, a route of 116kms would take 13 hours to complete.
Then, the motor car took over!

Open ....9.30 - 5pm weekdays & 10 - 4pm weekends & Public holidays.
Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.

Located 65km from Roma and 130km from St George, this small town would only have a population of about 1000 people. Surat, is a small town which for us, is a good stop-over on our travels out...
