When you decide to visit Surfers atay away if there's any cars racing as streets are blocked off, barricades are everywhere and this is in the couple of weeks leading up to the event. The freedom passes for the Gold coast shuttle are useless because you have to hike miles to get the bus where as in ordinary times they'd be virtually at your door.
It spoilt a great holiday for us.
Next time we'll stick to the South Coast
Unique Suggestions: Don't waste your money on a Gold coast shuttle freedom pass, hire a car instead.
Fun Alternatives: Don't go at INDY time or a week either side and definately stay away in schoolies week

Watch out for people in Surfers Paradise (particularly at Chevron Renaissance) who offer you prizes for nothing. These are just scams to get you in to there time share seminars. You have to sit through a 2 hour session with a salesman trying his best to suck you into handing over alot of money, before they will give you your prize, which is not worth it. Trust me, I've been there and done it!!
Unique Suggestions: If you don't mind wasting 2 hours for a bottle of wine or some dodgy holiday, go for it.
Fun Alternatives: I suggest to just say no to the prize, and just keep walking.

Not too far from Surfer's Paradise is Movie World - a Warner Brothers studio recreated in Australia. I was expecting something big with 10+ rides & roller coasters, but it is a sorry excuse for a theme park. I am 24 and I really enjoy a good theme park, but this sucked. There are only a few roller coasters and not much else to do if you are over the age of 10. I have no idea how they claim to be the #1 tourist attraction in Australia.
Unique Suggestions: My friends from Brisbane brought their daughter and she loved it. The Looney Tunes characters running around the park made her day.
Also, the Police Academy Stunt Show was entertaining and funny. There were some references in it that only adults would understand.
The Movie Magic Special Effects Show was good, too.
Fun Alternatives: Unless you have small children, save yourself the agony - go to the beach. This isn't worth your AU$50.

Being a place catered specially for tourists, the things and sourveniers in Gold Coast tend to be more expensive than other places.
