    Green Hill Fort

Overlooking the entire island is Green Hill Fort. First manned in 1893 after 30 men took two years to excavate and build it.
During the Second World War the threat of a possible Japanese Invasion saw Australian tropps occupy the island and also man outposts on surrounding islands.
Today the Fort Houses two museums.

Since the Fort is on one of the highest points of Thursday Island the view is quiet spectacular to all the islands of the Torres Strait such as the Wednesday and Friday Islands as well as the Prince of Charles Island which lays opposite to the port.

The cultural centre offers a unique glimpse into the lives and traditions of Australia's indigenous people. It is an interpretive display to establish the link between traditions and modern culture, as well as the diverse geography of the Torres Strait and the people's spiritual and practical connection with the sea.
During the dry season (June - August) you find workshops and cultural dance performances.

Part of the Green Hill Fort is a collection of Military artefacts showing the start of the Fort as well as during the times of the Second World War when Australian Forces were stationed here to protect Northern Australia against possible Japanese threat.
