Townsville has its own airport and is serviced by Qantas, Virgin Blue, JetStar and others. When I first came here, I took a flight from Brisbane with Qantas which took about two hours. This was a domestic flight, but it might as well be combined with an international flight if you need to go straight to Townsville.
There are shuttle services going to town.

Townsville is an important stop for Greyhound, so going by Greyhound bus is a good option if you want to travel to Townsville. The city lies on the East Coast route, so coming from Cairns it is a journey of six hours to the south to go to Townsville. The next main tourist destination further south is Airlie Beach/Whitsundays, and then further to Mackay, Bundaberg and so on. This makes Townsville a perfect stop if you are travelling up or down the east coast.
Townsville is also the major stop that connects the Queensland outback with the coast - the bus from Mt. Isa over Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Richmond and Charters Towers ends here. So coming from the outback you will need to change busses in Townsville.
Greyhound is a great and affordable option to travel Australia, is also used a lot by locals and is very comfortable and convenient.

Sunbus is the local bus company in Townsville. I did not use it as I like to walk around and found everything within reasonable distance, but I still wanted to include it in my tips in case someone is not so keen on walking!

This was my first trip to Townsville and I flew in from Brisbane on Jetstar. Definitely better than the drive which takes more than a day. I was in the air for less than 2 hours and it was a great flight with things to see along the way.
The Townsville airport is well set up and comfortable with lots of parking and a great selection of eateries and shops to pass the time whilst waiting for your plane.
Lots of great fares into Townsville if you keep your eyes open.

We flew to Mackay and then caught a McCafferty's bus from there to Townsville, which cost us a bit over $90 between 2 adults for a journey which took 6 hours. It was comfortable, fortunately well air conditioned, and we were happy to have chosen this way to travel there.
In the picture here you can also see above the bus, part off the Transit Centre Backpacker hostel where we stayed.

Never taken the train in Australia (that I'm aware of), but you guys know I'm a big advocate of rail travel, so here's a link to Queensland Rail, with info on Townsville.
