Whitsunday Islands Things to Do

  • Semisubmersible at the reef

Not being a swimmer, snorkeling was out for me, but there was an alternative. The dock had a semisubmersible with glass panes through which the reef could be viewed and photographed without special gear. The reef is outstanding, deserving of the natural wonder status. Shapes varied, mostly brains and fans. Colors were greenish because even at six...

  • Don wet suit and float the reef

Snorkelers had to don a wet suit - there may be stinging jellyfish - which takes about 30 minutes. Then it's off the dock and a float over the reef to see one of the world's natural wonders. I can't swim, so I used the semisubmersible. My wife snorkeled and said it was impossible to sink due to the wet suit. It is also impossible to take pictures...

  • Smiles all round.

It's obvious why we are smiling but Whitehaven Beach will bring a grin to the face of anyone, cool white sand, clear blue sea....a perfect location. The boat behind us hove gently into view, when we finished the ceremony & kissed a great cheer came from the crew, a nice touch.

Whitsunday Islands Restaurants

  • Indulge on board

All trips include board prepared by the hostie. On the British Defender our hostie was awesome she made some pretty great meals and there was plenty of food even enough to feed all us big hungry boys (there were 14 (large) guys and 7 girls on my trip. Nothing beats chillin' on deck catching rays and chowing down on goodole fashioned Aussie BBQ...

We ate at this restaurant one night while docked at the Hamilton Island Marina. It has marina views and has indoor or outdoor seating. The Rigatoni was very yummy!!! The pizza wasn't as good though since it didn't have much topping...

  • South Molle Island Restaurant

We had dinner at the restaurant at South Molle Island one night when we were anchored there. It was an all you can eat buffet meal with all sorts of foods for $28 per person. You could then eat your meal anywhere around the pool or bar area.

Whitsunday Islands Nightlife

  • Tie one on on dry land

Regardless of which company you decide to book with following your days at sea they will book a table for you at one of the local watering holes (most likely Magnum's or Beaches). It's pretty great you get free beer, a table all to yourselves and if you're lucky even some polynesian dancing! Beer is cheap (6-8 bucks for a jug) and the times are...

  • Drinking Game Olympics

Night number 2 on boad the boat is always the big drinking night, allegedly. By now everyone is used to the motion in the ocean, everyone knows each other and, well, it;s your last night on the boat so all the booze must go!When you mix backpackers and alcohol you the result will almost certainly be drinking games accompanied by alot of laughs and...

  • Airlie Nightlife

This bar located next to Koalas Resort, has a fairly good scene. There are pool tables to judge just how much you've drank. I lost my two games here. Anyway, after the pride of Airlie cruise, they are nice enough to give you a free going away dinner with a drink... which leads to more and more drinks and finally, losing badly at the aforementioned...

Whitsunday Islands Transportation

  • Sail boat

The only way to get to the Whitsundays is by boat (or perhaps private plane or helicopter), and I would by far prefer a sail boat, because it brings a little something to the experience. You should, however, choose company and vessel carefully, since some are party boats, while others are very calm. I would probably avoid the bigger vessels in both...

  • Whitehaven Express.

From Airlie to the Whitsunday Islands there is only one way to travel, by boat, and the best of these is the Whitehaven Express. Now capable of 23 knots this means you get more time over the reef and all the other wonderful places that we visited, take a peek at their website because one of the places you can visit is Hill Inlet, used in all the...

Whitsunday Islands Shopping

  • Take a hat.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, take a hat, UV resistant clothing and plenty of water resistant sunscreen. Don't forget sunglasses too, we removed ours for the photos which is why we are squinting in most of them.

  • Slip,Slap,Slop!

Get the lot! You will need a hat, sunglasses, sun screen (waterproof is recommended, i burned my feet and ankles when the sea washed my regular lotion off ) and UV resistant clothing, it is widely available now, even in the UK, and more so in Australia. It was a cloudy day when we got married but we still tanned, take care out there.

Who wants to get married in a tiny room when you can have all this? open skies, sunshine, a perfect beach and the sea around your feet. This is how it`s done in Australia.
We decided that the open air and beach were the way to go so we packed our bags, left our families at home and headed into the sun, after a few weeks touring around Australia visiting friends we headed for Airlie Beach and our big day.

Whitsunday Islands Warnings and Dangers

  • Hold on tight

One danger associated with sailing on biard a maxi yacht is that they get some serious lean when they start to pick uo speed! During our last sail of the trip one girl almost lipped off the high side straght into the water! Luckily she was grabbed before she had a watery demise! So hold on tight and make sure you grab onto something (or someone!)...

  • Whitehaven Worries

With the sand at Whitehaven beach being so white, the suns rays reflect every bit as much as snow. And if you have ever seen the raccoon snow tan, you should realize how much the reflection can tan you. Bring sunscreen. LOTS! You will need it. SPF 30+Also, protect your eyes with some glasses. I truly had problems seeing around without them. Very...

  • Slip, Slap, Slop!

We Brits aren`t too used to the sun but the Australians are, the `slip, slap, slop` campaign raised awareness of the dangers of too much sunshine and it`s good advice as the sun in Queensland can be fierce.Despite the clouds on the day of our wedding i still got burned, the sea lapping against my feet as i took my vows washed off my factor 30 and...

Now travelling with Tallarook I can only say DON'T DO IT, it might havebeen bad luck we had, but our boat the PEGASUS didn't want to leave the bloodyharbour, - engine breakdown. So we had to stay in the marina in Airlie Beach for 24 hours, which was a terrible start and on top of it the boat was just an old wreck. The cabins are all run down,...

Whitsunday Islands Off The Beaten Path

  • Beautiful beaches, deep blue waters.

We left Whitehaven beach and headed to Turtle Bay for some snorkelling, on the way we stopped at Tongue Bay for some sight seeing. We were dropped on the beach by the dingy and started a 15 minute walk up the hill to the lookout point. The short hike took us through a thick forest on a well marked route, all around us was the deafening sound of...

Whitsunday Islands Sports & Outdoors

  • Get into the water.

It's the Whitsundays! if you aren't in a boat you're in the water. Go diving/snorkeling over a reef and make friends with the fishes. If you have a waterproof camera this is the place to use it, the fishes look out for the boats and crowd around the hull.
