Look inviting from this angle doesn't it?

One danger associated with sailing on biard a maxi yacht is that they get some serious lean when they start to pick uo speed! During our last sail of the trip one girl almost lipped off the high side straght into the water! Luckily she was grabbed before she had a watery demise! So hold on tight and make sure you grab onto something (or someone!) that is sturdy!

White Sands of Whitehaven

With the sand at Whitehaven beach being so white, the suns rays reflect every bit as much as snow. And if you have ever seen the raccoon snow tan, you should realize how much the reflection can tan you. Bring sunscreen. LOTS! You will need it. SPF 30+
Also, protect your eyes with some glasses. I truly had problems seeing around without them. Very much a necessity.

what`s that bright thing?

We Brits aren`t too used to the sun but the Australians are, the `slip, slap, slop` campaign raised awareness of the dangers of too much sunshine and it`s good advice as the sun in Queensland can be fierce.
Despite the clouds on the day of our wedding i still got burned, the sea lapping against my feet as i took my vows washed off my factor 30 and my ankles got a good toasting so remember if you are going anywhere near the sea make sure your sunscreen is waterproof. After the ceremony i threw on a hat and some sunnies but the damage had already been done, you can now buy clothes that have a sun protection rating too.

The months from October through to May are "stinger" season. You may want to hire/buy a lycra suit to swim in if you plan to swim in the ocean during those months for safety reasons (the stingers can kill)... Otherwise you can swim in the lagoon at Airlie Beach and be safe from any stingers. :)

Stingers are jellyfish. These nasty critters are a problem during stinger season when swimming is not advised at all. Being stung is very painful and can be life threatening.

When we went (November), stinger season had not quite started so we swam and went diving without a problem. However we were still advised to wear "stinger suits", a sort of lycra all-in-one that helps to stop you get stung should you encounter one of these nasty beasts.

When you are out on the beaches in the islands, don't wear dark coloured tee shirts as these attract the local flies. I started out wearing a dark blue Airlie Beach shirt on Whitehaven Beach. But a huge fly settled on my shoulder and I could feel its bite through the shirt. Luckily I had a spare white one that I quickly changed into.

You can't actually swim in the sea on Airlie beach because of the jellyfish and Marine stingers
