While I left Adelaide for Perth by Indian-Pacific train, I returned by plane. I had a very affordable Jetstar flight and was totally satisfied with it. The flight took about two and a half hours.
Other airlines serving Adelaide are Qantas and Virgin Blue. International flights to Adelaide are also conducted by Cathay Pacific, Malaysian Airlines and Singapore Airlines.
At the airport, my luggage came so late that I missed the airlink bus to the city centre, so I shared a taxi with a man who was in the same situation. Otherwise, Skylink seems to be the best option, but I cannot look up the prices as the website is currently under construction.

South Australia's Capital City, Adelaide is serviced by one of the premier airports in Australia. Named as the Australian Capital City's Airport of the Year, ADL is no slouch on the airport circuit. Great facilities, plenty of direct and indirect connections, and a larger number of international carriers bless this tiny regional outpost's main air center. It is a shock to me that small Adelaide (in comparison to Sydney/Melbourne) could have similar or better flight schedules than their bigger brothers. Way to go politicians fighting for SA!
Domestically, ADL services Qantas, Virgin Blue, and Jetstar (the big three). Rurally, it has REX, National Jet, and O'connor for small hops. Internationally, Qantas, Cathay to HKG, Singapore, Malaysia to KL, and Air New Zealand if you are going to the "eastern states" of Australia, New Zealand.

Adelaide Airport has finally opened their new terminal! Construction was done in October of 2005, the scheduled time for opening, however it was delayed due to some kind of contamination in the fuel lines that are used to refuel the jets.
Now that the new terminal is open, you can finally access your plane via an aerobridge instead of walking across the runway. Especially nice on cold rainy days!

As of September 2005 there is a new bus service from the Adelaide Airport the the City centre and on to the O-bahn to Klemzig and Tea Tree Plaza and Golden Grove.
The Service starts at 4.30am and runs every 15minutes.
The best thing about this service is that it costs the same amount as any other bus, train or tram, just $3.50 (make sure you have some coins or smaller notes). You can use the ticket you buy to connect to any other public transport as many times as you want within 2 hours of purchase. This is a normal full-sized bus (not a coach) so there's not a lot of room for luggage.
If you do have a lot of luggage a taxi might be better. Taxis from the Adelaide Airport to the CBD are reasonably cheap at somewhere between $10-$15 so if there are a few of you, you're better off.

Adelaide has a very small airport but it is okay. there are regular frights from all of the states and also singapore and all of the usual spots. If you are in a different Australian state then I don't recomend travelling by train. the trains are very slow ( except for the gahn) take the bus, its not terrifically fast but it is alright and quite comfortable.
Don't rely on the adelaide transportation system, it is crap. Busses don't run at night, and the trains are usually slow and stop in dark, scary suburbs. Usually to get home from a party or club, take a taxi.

There are so many ways to get to Adelaide. If time is a problem then you will have to fly. If you are travelling from Melb to drive along the coast is beautiful. It is around 920km but very scenic. From Sydney you can drive via Broken Hill. This lets you experience many different landscapes. It is about 1400km so it takes a while but there are lots of things to see on the way. If you have lots of money then flying is great but try to do at least one overland trip. There is no better way to really get to see Australia than to get out into the tiny country towns and outback areas.
There are trains from Sydney twice a week. There are also bus services. A bus company called 'Wayward buses' runs a good trip from Melb that takes about 3 days and includes the Great Ocean road.
