Whispering Wall: The Whispering Wall
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the highest dam in Australia, the retaining dam of the Barossa Reservoir, is better known as the "Whispering Wall".

The water comes from through a tunnel more than two kilometres through the range from a weir on the South Para River.

The tall thin concrete dam curved against the pressure of the water was radical at the time of construction over a 100 years ago and the parabola effect casuse soundwave bounces so ppl speaking at one end of the dam can be heard as if the person is standing beside you ! The wall is one sector of a perfect circle, and the soundwaves bounce in a series of straight jumps along it to the other end. Hence the nick Whispering Wall

The Adelaide City Council has published a number of brochures for self guided walking tours of the city and surrounds. these are available at the Tourist Information booth in Rundle Mall or can be downloaded from:
    http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/discover/visitor/walks_activities_trails.htm

During our walk around North Adelaide we came across many mansions, the Anglican Cathedral of St Peter, old hotels and shops and working men's cottages. A little of this is shown in the Travelogue.

    City Centre: Boer War Memorial
  • Tip Rating:
  • Australia in general seems to have a lot of War Memorials, with Gallipoli in the forefront, though WWI as a whole seems to be treated with reverence. Less common is a memorial to the Boer War, like the one seen here. If what we know now about the Boer War was known at the time, I'm not sure they would have erected this monument, but as it stands, its there.

Its on North at King William, so its really not all that off the beaten path. The statue is however, not very conspicuous and you could overlook it if you weren't watching.

    City Centre: St. Peter's Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • This beautiful Neogothic Cathedral was finished in 1901 after a construction period of 22 years.
The helpful ladies who attend to the church will answer all the questions concerning the church. In addition to it there are a couple leaflets in different languages to guide you through the building.
The church is open from 9.30am to 4pm every day.

Very close to the city of Adelaide, on the eastern side, at the base of the Adelaide foothills, is a beautiful little spot. This is Morialta Conservation Park. He you can spend the day, having a picnic at one of the charming little spots.
A walk to the First Falls is a must. The walking track meanders its way up to the falls, passing over Fourth Creek quite a few times. On the way to the falls, you can climb up to the Giant Caves... I remember going there as a school girl, my whole class fitting into the cave.
The falls are spectacular after a heavy rain. Thats the best time to go.
For the more adventurous, there is rock climbing. This is done of Norton Summit Road.
Do be careful, as many people have had to be rescued.

Adelaide Hills: I guess this isn't quite off...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I guess this isn't quite off the beaten path, but almost.
The Chain of Ponds is situated in the Adelaide Hills
region. I haven't been there myself, but I am told it is a beautiful vinyard area, with a real 'Tuscany' feel about it.
You will find a Map of the region in my Travelogue.

I think it is a great idea, when we are travelling to new places, to always visit the 'Tourist Information Center' They will always have 'Up to Date' information, and some even have Booking Facilities.
