Festival theatre Amphitheatre

The Amphitheatre over looks the River Torrens. It seats about 600 people. In the warmer months there are often free shows going on in this area. Just to the side of it is the Elder park cafe/restaurant and public toilets.
The mural on the Amphitheatre wall was painted by six local artists in 1992 from a design by Adelaide based Aboriginal artist Trevor Nickolls. The long stick figure (mimi) is adapted from the Aboriginal mythology - dreaming. He floats between land and sky. Its a contemporary piece using both Aboriginal and western painting techniques. The artist wanted to portray the scene of harmony between cultures, body and mind as well as people and nature.

Festival Theatre Market

Small but quaint market sets up every Sunday from 10am to 4pm. The stalls are prodominatly handmade items, paintings, jewellery and unique artworks. The market is situated in front of one of the theatre's restaurants that have tables outside as well as in. The market normally has a live band as well.
Because of its small size its probably not worth the visit on its own but if you are there to take in the surrounding park lands then its a lovely way to spend a 1/2 hour.
The market runs from October to March.

The Adelaide Festival Centre was built in 1974 and is Adelaide's major performing arts complex. It includes a multi-purpose concert hall and lyric theatre, two drama theatres, and an open-air amphitheatre. The centre sits right on the banks of the River Torrens adjacent to the city centre and Casino.

The Adelaide Arts Festival...

The Adelaide Arts Festival attracts beret-wearing types from all around Aus. It has become rather mainstream in recent years, with commissioned shows and Aus premiers of major touring events, but the 'Fringe Festival' still includes free shows and off-the-wall events. The opening ceremony is (or was) free.
South Australia (Adelaide is the capital of this state) is the home to COOPER'S beer, renowned nationwide for its taste, natural brewing process and POTENCY. Do NOT fall for the local's quaint habit of shaking the bottle before opening ... the beer is fermented in the bottle and has a sediment which will make you very woeful the next day.

This area is located right in the heart of the city and on the banks of the Torrens River. Its a very pleasant place to while away the time and to explore.

Festival Centre Grounds with the Casino in the background.

This is the real heart of the festival and the cultural centre of Adelaide, if not South Australia.
